no way would i ever be spraying any of that stuff up my nose ever again, but i have a fear of pharmaceuticals anyway
after 33 years of taking daily allergy meds, i had my severely deviated septum repaired...no one ever even bothered to look up there, just kept writing the Rx; luckily my sleep doc sent me to an ENT and i've been off all that crap for over a year now
i use the NeilMed sinus rinse, along with the pre-measured packets; my daily routine has gotten so cluttered due to cpap, i go the easy route
but i have a (maybe) dumb question: why does anyone need to use these products if they don't have allergies? i was told "environmental rhinitis" my whole life, and while i do have a sensitivity to scents, temperature changes, air blowing at me and dust, it's still not bad enough since the surgery to warrant medication
oh and incidentally, i am one of the people who can't use heated humidity...i use the HH in passover mode, and make sure to apply secaris to the inside of my nostrils before hosing up; any congestion i do have is quickly eliminated by the airflow (a fact that i now know thanks to gumbyCT, who encouraged me to use my cpap even when congested for this very reason)

We use the drugs because our lives are hell without them.
What is "secaris"? Is it like Ayr Gel?
In my case, I was filling up a standard office wastebasket with tissues every shift. My nose ran that much. I finally got to see a doc, and she hooked me up with a cocktail of flonase and claritin. I can take or leave the claritin as needed, but I'm hooked on flonase. It keeps me clear, keeps me sane, and I can breathe through my nose, which makes the cpap work. )))
I'm on Symbicort for my asthma too. I think the trick is to take as few meds as you can humanly stand. I am slowly cutting meds out of my life. But I'm still on Flonase. Maybe there will be a day I can depend on NeilMed's Sinus Rinse ALONE, but that day isn't here yet.
Afrin doesn't work. You THINK it's working, but you're wrong. Please find a doctor who will diagnose your REAL issue and get you some decent medication.
Cheers,
Barbara

but that's what i'm asking babs:
do you have allergies? are these meds for allergies or for something else? why is this 'afrin' even available? so many people around here would rather set themselves on fire than use it! and some of them i've never even heard of
i had the same experience before my septoplasty: constant sneezing, runny nose, headaches...i was lucky that the deviated septum was the culprit; i was unlucky in that not one of my doctors was competent or concerned enough to look beyond their prescription pad for so damn long
secaris is a nasal lubricant...i don't know if it's the same thing as ayr gel, cause i don't know what ayr gel is made for
i agree with you on taking as few meds as possible; you should see the cocktail my dr. tried to prescribe me for fibromyalgia...no way in hell was i taking that, especially after the pharmacist was candid enough to let me know that i'd be "groggy well into the next day" after every nightly dose...for as long as i took the meds!!! yeah, thanks but no thanks....
i hate that i have to take requip every day; i'm just glad it's such a low dose, but still, hate putting that crap into my body

cross
in the case of allergies, do you find this stuff works?
before my septoplasty i was sent to an allergist; he told me none of this stuff works and is actually really bad for you; he recommended the shots, to commence after my septo if i was still suffering the same symptoms, as i did have the 'usual' allergies; luckily, like i said, the symptoms have been manageable enough not to put me back on that medication rollercoaster
has anyone ever tried the shot? do they work? are they too inconvenient?
just wondering

My mother had decent results with the shots. But it did not make her allergies go away completely. I saw the same thing with many friends who had them. Mom takes allergy meds more than I do at this point. I take an occasional clariton (now over the counter) when its really bad. I was given nasonex to balance the dryness that claratin gives the sinuses. I find that the salt water works better for that.
I found the salt water when my acupunturist gave me her recipe for it as a simply nose cleaner. Again, it was my allergies that she was treating. I only used it occasionally but found it helped prevent allergies from turning into sinus infections (from mucuous just being stuck in there and breeding germs, I guess).
I just started doing it again now while I am on cpap because it keeps my nose clear and my apap doesn't seem to go up as high. I get woken up when it tries to go above 14.

I get allergy shots. For me, they cleared up 80% to 90% of the congestion I had. I use prescription Astelin nose spray (antihistamine, not a steroid) as needed now.sharon1965 wrote:has anyone ever tried the shot? do they work? are they too inconvenient?
I started out getting shots twice a week. Over time, the frequency is reduced. After a year, I think I was getting shots once every 2 weeks. Now I get shots around once a month. Yes it's inconvenient. For me, it is definitely worth it.
Dan
I'm a newbie (almost 3 weeks) and have had a problem with sore throats and just dry everything. Using an M Series heated passover humidifier set at 4 with little resolution. Just told by my doctor to use a Neti Pot which has worked so far. Its natural (no meds) and is a gentle cleanser for nasal passages. May be worth a try.
Addicted to Afrin?
think I remember you?, weren't you the guy that came here and swore up and down that Afrin wasn't addicting? We got into a big argument about it, think you said you were diluting it or something and/or mixing it with crack or something else, you tried to recruit a bunch of others in your way of thinking but there wasn't many buying in to it.
It is like Jed Clampet used to say "You all come back now ya hear"
If your body needed Afrin it would produce it on its own.

Why do black tires make white smoke?
Re: Addicted to Afrin
After 6 years of daily afrin I got the surgeries. Wish i hadn't waited so long. If you have an obstruction see an snt and fix it. A spray can't fix it.
