What Is a Desirable Respiratory Rate Whilst Sleeping??

Post by Slinky » Thu Apr 24, 2008 9:49 am

For those of you w/the software to assess this data, what is your usual respiratory rate?

My 95th percentile has been running at 21, my Median at 16 and my Maximum at 26 for this past month on a bi-level.

Women are Angels. And when someone breaks our wings, we simply continue to fly.....on a broomstick. We are flexible like that.
My computer says I need to upgrade my brain to be compatible with its new software.

If I recall correctly, Slinky, you have COPD. Perhaps your respiratory rate is going to be considerably different from that of people without COPD?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Respiratory_rate

"Normal findings

Average respiratory rate reported in a healthy adult at rest is usually given as 12 breaths per minute (12/60Hz)[1][2] but estimates do vary between sources: e.g. 12 to 20 breaths per minute, 10-14,[3], and between 16-18[4], etc. With such a slow rate, more accurate readings are obtained by counting the number of breaths over a full minute.

Right on, RestedGal, I do have COPD and didn't expect mine would be "normal", just wondered how it compared. Thanks!

By the way, not bad memory for a gal who "only" got 80% on when she saw the pics!

Wanna try Tidal Volume?? (mL)

95th Percentile = 500, Median = 300, Maximum = 920

Ha! I just checked Wikipedia for that one. My maximum must include when I take my mask off and leave the xPAP running!!!!

I gotta go with RG on this. My own testing & observations tell me that 12 BPM is looking good as a rate when I view my own data. I have seen mine vary from 6 BPM to 40 BPM (yes 40 is hyper ventilating & it happened when I configured a Vpap III S/T in a particular way).

DLFO is a classic example of someone with serious breathing complications who's rate varies markedly on any night.

I could be way out in the weeds here but I thought the normal respiratory rate of 12-20 was for a conscious person?? Not sleeping, right?

And for those of us with OSA - don't we hold our breath? So what 2/min? Well until we wake up then we play catch up!!!

Well - out in the weeds?

Go ahead, Gumby!!! Confuse me. Now you've got my curiosity up again. Hopefully I'll catch one of "our" sleep techs in live chat and be able to pin them down on "sleeping" respiration rate "norms".

Resting rate isn't necessarily sleeping rate. Trouble maker!!
