Good night with Ultra Mirage FF Mask

Post by Newsgrouper » Mon May 30, 2005 7:40 am

ResMed recommendations to keep the straps reasonably loose really do decrease the leaks from the Ultra Mirage FF mask. I did so and had a very good night with it. The mask was comfortable and forgiving when this side sleeper was changing sides during the night. When it did leak a little I would move the mask a bit and the leak would stop. I am very excited about being able to use this FF mask. I get very good results from my Mirage Active nasal mask but must keep my mouth taped (air leaks) when I use it. The mouth taping is very uncomfortable.

Way to go, newsgrouper!! I've been using the Ultramirage FF mask for almost 4 months now and, like you, once I realized it had to be on kinda-sorta loosely, it started working great!

Keep us posted.

Thanks Severeena. I see that you had no luck with the UltraMirage FF mask. Many here think it the best FF mask but it doesn't work for everyone. Imperfect is our OSA world.

Newsgrouper and TXKajun,

What is your pressure? Mine is 12 and I can't keep the darn thing (UltraMirage FF) from lifting off!!!! Fortunately I'm having good luck these days with the F & P FlexiFit 431 FF (which most people don't like!!!!) So I figure if Severeena has luck with the Hans Rudolph I might try it too because I seem to like masks panned by the masses....

neversleeps, I'm using the 420E on APAP and Ultramirage FF mask from 4 to 20 cm. Most nights my 90% pressure is 11 or 12, but occasionally it goes up to 18 or 19. My titrated pressure was 16. I've noticed that when the pressure gets up to 17 or 18, the mask is prone to "noisy" leaks. I just wake up briefly, hit the on/off button twice (once to turn it off, a second time to turn it back on and start it again at 4) and then I'm back to sleep.

Red Sox

ultra mirage d.d. mask

Post by Red Sox » Fri Jun 03, 2005 1:55 am

any of the users here that are using the mirage f.f. mask have a problem with the red mark/sore bridge of the nose ?

I started using the f.f. a week ago and over all I like it but now i'm getting the red spot and sore bridge of the nose, I've loosened the straps to the
point where I don't think I can loosen them anymore.

I tried a small piece of tissue paper on the bridge of my nose held
on with a band-aid but that makes the mask leak.

any ideas ???

Red sores from Ultra Mirage FFm

Hi Red Sox,

Have you tried adjusting the position of the mask tilt?
Might help, but if you already have a sore, you might want to wait for it to heal before using CPAP again.

I've found that a small...about 1.5"... piece of paper tape across the bridge of my nose works pretty well. You can find it at Walmart, next to the medical tape. It doesn't completely alleviate the red mark, but it sure takes care of the soreness. Also, it doesn't seem to have any effect on the mask seal.

I had my first night last night with the Repironics full face comfort curve. You might try it if the Ultra Mirage doesn't work for you. I got a new mask yesterday. At the DME's office, I tried two Ultra Mirage Full Face masks but both leaked very badly around the elbow joint. The DME said that there had been a recall by the Ultra Mirage people because of leaks around the elbow joint. You might try the Comfort Curve. Everybody I've ever heard of says that this mask is awful but I had a really good night. I loosened the straps as much as possible and only had one minor leak all night. I just wiggled the mask a little and the leak stopped. I really think the key to using a full face mask is putting the straps on as loose as possible. I have a constant pressure of 12. I'm on straight C-pap. Also, use the ramp even if you don't normally don't use it. It helps keep the seal better as the pressure goes up. Good luck!!

Hey tater pie,

Okay, I'm confused. (I know, I know, so what else is new....)

The Comfort Curve isn't a full face mask. The Ultra Mirage full face mask doesn't have elbows.

The Comfort Curve is having a problem with leaky elbows... AHHHHH!! I'm terribly confused!

What mask did you try that you liked?

After trying many different bandaids and scar pads and tapes, I have found something that really helps with skin abrasion and with the mask seal at the bridge of my nose: microfoam tape manufactured by 3M and sold as "Nexcare High Cushion Premium Foam Tape."

I have used this with my Activa mask and with my Ultra Mirage FFM. This tape is the only thing that works for me in helping to reduce mask leak into my eyes, while also preventing the sores and red marks on my nose where the mask hits across the bridge. I was unable to find the tape locally, so I ordered it from drugstore.com.

I hope this helps.

Neversleeps. I apologize for confusing you. You're absolutely right. I used the Comfort full face mask by Respironics, not the Comfort Curve, and the Ultra Mirage does not have an elbow joint. I meant that the area around where the hose connected to the mask leaked. Sorry for the confusion.

I have had the red marks on my face ever since I started using my Mirage FF.

Severeena:
Are you still using the Mirage FF or are the marks left over from some time ago? I will get a good night or two with mine but then have a terrible time with it the next night. Can't figure it out.
