Actually, 5 years ago, after a conversation with a friend who had been diagnosed and placed on CPAP, I approached my doctor questionning whether I should be tested for SA. My doctor at the time was under the wide spread idea that an overnight pulse-oxymetry reading was the best way to determine if a complete sleep study should be completed. My overnight readings were very low-normal, but they were still considered normal.
This time, my new doctor listened to my concerns over my energy level and symptoms of depression, anxiety, high BP, etc. and suggested that a sleep study would be next logical step. I am so thankful that he took the time to listen and not just recommend another pharmaceutical solution!

Like others, I owe my wife. After years of telling me that my snoring wasn't normal and that I was gasping, I asked my Dr who immediately agreed to set up the sleep study.
It's kind of ironic that my Dr never suggested the sleep study, as I now know we were treating symptons of OSA, such as excessive sleepiness which is partially a thyroid problem but didn't resolve the sleepinesss, high blood pressure, headaches...

I diagnosed myself.
After too many years of restless and unrestful sleep, daytime sleepiness, and just general tiredness, I asked my GP whether I could have sleep apnea. He looked at me, paused for a moment and said that it's possible, and he gave me a referal for a sleep study. He also gave me a full blood work-up just to rule out other possibilities (all showed normal).
My sleep study on Feb 21 showed AHI of 27 and O2 desaturation of 88% . On Mar 4th I was put on a loaner CPAP with pressure of 8 cm h20.
My second sleep study (titration study) on April 2 showed that pressures up to 10 cm h20 did not fully control my apnea. My sleep doctor (not the GP) prescribed an Auto pap with pressure of 12 / 5. I've now been on this for a week. I have doubts that 12/5 the correct pressure for for me, but until I get my software (ordered yesterday) and can establish a baseline, I won't change it. I want to give it a few more weeks.
I'm still sleepy all the time, but my wife reports that I'm "happier" and a little more energetic. That's a positive turn, but it could be just due to the warmer, sunnier weather.
I'm workin' on it.

I was diagnosed after Gallbladder surgery in Jan 2006. While in the Recovery Room, they could not keep my Oxygen Sat's up and they could not fully awaken me. I was in Recovery for over 3 hours and nearly had to be re-intubated. My surgeon insisted on the earliest Sleep Study that could be arranged.
I am a nurse and had only heard of SA in passing. I thought my fatigue and "brain fog" was due to my crazy work schedule. My study showed an AHI of 18 and Sat's down to 84%, so I was diagnosed with Moderate SA and have been on CPAP @11 for more than 2 years. I thank GOD that my wonderful surgeon caught it and insisted on immediate testing. My life is greatly improved now that I am not walking around in a fog.

1/2 my husband and 1/2 myself.
My husband has always complained about my snoring. The poor man had to wear earplugs every single night and his ears sometimes bleed. Even then he can still sometimes hear me snoring through the earplugs. I snore on my side, on my back, on my stomach... it doesn't matter. I've always snored, so I didn't think too much of it until I married. I didn't realize I was so loud that I could be heard on other floors of the house!
At the same time my psychiatrist tried to diagnose me with ADHD. The medication improved my concentration but totally destroyed my ability to problem solve. oops. But that combined with my husband's complaints about my horrible snoring made me think. I did a little research and realized that all these things in my life that I'd explained away or tried to medicate away could all be caused by lack of sleep! (I'm a tad annoyed my psychiatrist never suggest it.)
So I called and made myself an appointment with the local sleep center! Turns out I do have sleep apnea and I'm on the path to getting proper treatment. These past four nights with a cpap have been very promising, and my husband is extremely happy to be earplug free for once!
