i was having problems with my liberty with the nose pillows popping out in the middle of the night ,this was my fix
i took a piece of paper surgical tape made a 1 1/2 inch diameter circle with it then kind of folded it over on itself so there is no more sticky then i loop it over the nose cushions ,i make it so its loose enough that they dont touch each other but tight enough that they dont move around once they are seated.
i have had no problems with my liberty since doing that about 4 months ago i love this mask and use it just about every night.the only time i shy away from it is if my face is dried out or irritated and then i switch back to my swift 11 for a night or 2.luckily it hasnt been that often though !!

1 other thing the swivel on mine broke one night when i rolled over on it ,i tried a drop of epoxy first but that let go when i tried to clip it on the mask so i reached into the first aid kit and found another roll of surgical tape ,the fabric and vynyl kind that comes on a metal spool and is stored in a metal can then wrapped it around the the edge of the ellbow a couple times and its been fine since .that probably happened about a month after i got it so its been like thats since sometime in october.

Thanks Rooster !! great info. can,t wait for it to get here tomorrow. my optimum pressure seems to be around 9-11. i agree that if your mask is gonna get skewed it is generally around 4am when you are in that nice deep stage sleep

Hi all,

I've used the Liberty for 3 nights now.

I have had good energy during the days following the Liberty. I do wake up feeling uuuuuurggghhhhhl and my face is quite puffy for a while. I think I might be overtightening it.

When it is good, it is very very good, when it is bad it is, well, horrid.

It takes a *lot* of fiddling to get it to fit right when I put it on. I hope this will resolve with time. Last night I was extremely fastidious putting it on, and it worked beautifully straight away, then I had a bit of fiddle with my pillow (sore shouder) and all was lost, major leaks, and up and down to the mirror to refix it.
I do have an elastoplast on my "moustache" area at the moment which may be jinxing things.

I'm not passing judgment yet, as I want to give myself time to get used to it.

I will say though, that don't even consider it if you are short of patience (in spite of my sig I am unusually patient - or stubborn if you prefer)
and don't try it if you are a bit clumsy with your fingers, the fastener at the bottom is tricky to fix and pops open if you brush it. I think women will find it easier to fasten are we are more used to doing makeup & hair in the mirror, but it is very tricky. My long bouncy hair makes it more difficult to fit though.

When it works well it is very light and comfortable. My Ai have been 0.5 to 1.0, and my HIs have been round 4 or 5. Some of those have been mask fiddling, not actual sleep disordered breathing.

Di

Do you make a hoop with the sticky tape? or more of a disc?

Thanks Rooster, but I'm fully up on tights

I have some round my neck as I type - my own, unfortunately

Don't think they fit the pillows in this instance though.

They work well on my Hybrid which is a similar design to the Liberty.

The band of tights does not have to "fit" the pillows. It just lies over the pillows and part of my nose, providing a gentle pressure that holds the pillows in place when I thrash around in my sleep.

Experiment with them a little and you may find a good solution.

Good luck.

Getting used to the Liberty

Post by Moby » Wed Mar 26, 2008 5:23 pm

Hi all,

update as requested

I am getting increasing comfortable with the Liberty. My only problem was the nose pillows leaking in the middle of the night. I tried various fixes without success, then rang the sleep clinic and asked to trial some different size pillows. They sent me out the small and the large straight away (I'll plug the Aussie St John of God Sleep Clinics again, they have given me excellent service, though they are somewhat secretive about some things as all tecs are - but I digress).

I received the pillows yesterday, and after a fiddle, decided to trial the large last night.

What a difference! I slept all night, not waken by leaks, and feel very refreshed this morning, waking naturally after 7 hours sleep. Lately I have been sleeping 9 hours if I could and was still groggy in the morning.

I loosened all the mask straps quite a bit, and my eyes weren't swollen this morning, and my nose wasn't hoiked up to my forehead all night as it is with the med. pillows and with the Swift too. Maybe it was the swollen eyes that made me feel groggy.

it is a lovely quiet mask, and very comfortable against the face.

I wouldn't recommend it as a first mask, as it is quite complex to troubleshoot, presenting the problems of both nasal pillows and FF masks.

The headgear is the key I have found.

At first I found the headgear very frustrating and tricky, but now I find it quick and easy, - quicker and easier every night.

It is great not to fiddle with tape and tights etc, though I do use two "buffs" with it, one over my hair and one over the headgear.

regards

Di

I did some mask trialing last week -- an opus, a breeze & a liberty. I discovered, as I expected, that I couldn't use the opus nor breeze because of mouth breathing. Unfortunately, I never did manage to figure out how to put the liberty on without spending about 15 minutes fiddling in front of a mirror. Given that I generally wake up to go to the bathroom at least once a ngiht and I remove my mask to do so, there's no way that I'll turn on the light, put on my glasses and mess around trying to put the thing back on.

Unfortunately, I happened to be stuck with an idiot RT, a new guy at my DME, who wasn't interested in helping me figure it out so I returned the loaner masks. I had broken the elbow nosepiece on my UMFF so I bought a new nosepiece and decided to heck with it. The jerk RT didn't install the nosepiece properly so I spent half the night being constantly woken up as the tabs on the elbow retainer kept moving around and scratching me. I finally got up, rummaged around to find the box the UMFF came in when I got it about 1-1/2 years ago and looked up the instructions to figure out how to fix it. I've since complained about this idiot RT and learned that the DME has had many other complaints.

Eventually I might do another mask trial and re-try the liberty and possibly the hybrid, assuming I can deal with another RT.

I'm probably no expert having only had my hybrid for a little over a week, but I can tell you there is quite a difference between the hybrid and the liberty. the problem with the liberty, in my opinion , has to do with the pillows. They will bend when you try to sleep on your side and they are blocked or pop out every time I would move around. I have had no such problem with the hybrid, nore do my teeth hurt.
I think I got a great deal more for my money with the hybrid and I just can't believe the pillows, they are great. You can actually adjust the height, not just change the size. Big improvement.
