AHA! The answer to my humidifier mystery, as per several above posts, popped into my head this morning, after a good night's sleep (using my oral appliance, rather than CPAP, I might add). As is not uncommon, I had everything bass ackwards.

CPAP heated humidifiers do not measure humidity; they control it instead through a surrogate. Most of them maintain a constant humidity by maintaining a constant WATER temperature (based on the heater plate temperature, based on the user dial setting) in the reservoir. Since it is necessary that I be different, my fancy-ass system controls the humidity instead by maintaining a constant AIR temperature at the mask end of the tubing.

So, when I switched from the "warmer" ResMed blower to the "cooler" Respironics blower, the AIR temperature in my humidifier chamber DROPPED by 6 degrees F. To compensate, the device RAISED the WATER temperature by this amount, which significantly raised the humidity output.

For normal people, then, if you use a stand-alone humidifier, and switch from a "warmer" ResMed to a "cooler" Respironics machine, you might expect your humidifier output to decrease. Go figure.
