? full face ?

Post by whatrdreammadeof » Sat Feb 16, 2008 11:24 am

Hello to all, it's been a long time.
I am currently having my first sinus infection, cold since I began cpap.
I've had kept a full face mask for just such an occasion, however not being a mouth breather, I find my cheeks blowing up like a ballon and I seem to be swallowing lots of air. I know I'm probably suppose to inhale orally, but what about the swallowing of air, will it bloate me up? How can I keep my cheeks from puffing out? I know these ?,s sound silly but I can't keep the mask on with all this hoopla going on.
Thanks,
Ellen

Whatever gave you that idea? My full face mask allows me to breathe alot better through my nose and my mouth generally stays shut.

Depending on how "bad" your sinus infection is, there have been posts in the past that recommended NOT using CPAP therapy until it clears up.

If you use heated humidification, you might want to turn it down or off. Heated/humid air has a tendency to close off a person's nasal passages. The cool air MAY help shrink any swelling that might be there.

"Whatever gave you that idea?" - How she's feeling is what did it - I think you may question the theory, but she's having the experience.

It was my interpretation from reading her post that she was under the impression that she was SUPPOSED to breathe through her mouth with a full face mask. My take was that she was only trying to breathe through her mouth with the full face mask she has.
Maybe she'll clarify that for us.

And, maybe you or others have some better first-hand experience or advice to provide to Ellen.
I was under the impression from past posts I've read that something like a direct nasal pillows mask could exacerbate the infection and make it worse, but I would hate to think of having to give up therapy......so I'm not sure what advice to give in that regard.
I have not had a sinus infection since starting CPAP therapy.....although in years past, I used to get them.

I have just gotten over my first major sinus infection since starting xpap. I also had a double ear infection. I was told to keep using xpap, as tolerated. I switched to a FF mask during this time, since as soon as I lay down my nose clogged completely. I would have to breathe through my mouth to get to sleep, but at some point during the night I switched to breathing through my nose. Each morning I awoke breathing through my nose. By the time I finished the antibiotics I was back to a nasal mask. I did have to remove the mask and move to the recliner a few nights due to increased pain in my ears.

Wait a minute. I thought that warm moist air would better keep nasal passages open while cold air would close them - after all heat expands and cold contracts.

That's correct! And it has that effect on the tissues in your nasal passages. The cool air shrinks the tissues, allowing you to breathe better/easier.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the positive feedback Julie, bdp55.
I guess " I got the idea that you could breathe through both your clogged nose and mouth with a full face mask." After all why would so many chat here about having one in case of a cold, silly me!"
Thanks again,
Take Care,

I guess I cold can be different from a sinus infection, but I have found that the humidified air helps me breathe better and reduces tremendously the severity of my cough during a cold. I have been using a higher heat setting than usual since I've had the cold, but based on the last post, I will try a reduced heat setting tonight.

It is important to know what you do have. A cold is a rhinovirus and commonly just takes time and treating yourself well to get rid of. There are currently no drugs that will effectively kill a cold virus.

A sinus infection is a bacterial infection and can be very dangerous. Usually antibiotics are needed to cure a sinus infection.
