Corner of Lips Sore

Post by snugglebunny » Tue Feb 12, 2008 3:37 pm

I've been taping my mouth closed since last April. Recently I've experienced red marks (soreness) at the corners of my lips. I use 1" 3M microporetape placed horizontally over my entire lip area. I apply lip balm very heavily before use. Does anyone have a solution or tip?

Could be oral thrush are they cracked at the corners? you will need thrush cream and vitamin b dosage high if thats the case. It took me 2 months for mine to heal

I've been having that problem off and on. For me, I think it is from drooling in my sleep, because usually when I have that problem I have woken up drooling.

You could try using Aquaphor healing ointment on the corners of your mouth during the day. You could use it at night also, but be sure to only use a tiny bit(it will keep the tape from sticking). You can get Aquaphor at almost any drug store. Get the smallest size possible, this stuff goes a long way and lasts forever. If the soreness is due to chapping, the Aquaphor should solve the problem in a day or two.

Sore skin around mouth

Post by grumpygirl » Wed Feb 13, 2008 8:13 am

Hello All- I've been having a problem with irritations of the skin around my bottom and upper lip. I am using Micropore tape also and have been using it for several months now. If I apply any cream to help soothe it the darn tape won't stick. I tried using a Hybrid FF mask for a night and I can't stand the way it leaks and the feeling of the chin flap. Any suggestions?

You could try putting a thin coat of milk of magnesia on the skin first. The tape will still stick, but you will have a protective coating on the skin. I have done this on occasion and it works well for me. I only use the Milk of magnesia for as long as it takes for the skin to clear up(usually 2 or 3 days).

Skin irritations around mouth

Post by grumpygirl » Wed Feb 13, 2008 8:23 am

Well thanks Brenda that is something I never would have thought of. I'll get some Milk of Magnesia today and hopefully it will help. BTW, my doc was not very happy recently when I told her I was taping my mouth. She went on about suffocation etc, etc. I really did not know how to respond to what she was saying-only that FF masks are just too uncomfortable for me and I am happy with my Opus now. Do any of you have any fear of suffocation due to taping ? How do you resolve those questions?

I told my MD that I was taping every night and he was fine with it. I can get the tape off in about 2 seconds if need be. If for any reason my machine shuts down, I wake up almost immediately.
Bottom line is only you can decide if taping is right for you. It works for me.

Thanks Brenda. I'm going to try the Aquaphor healing ointment. I'll also try placing the tape vertically and not cover the corners of my mouth until it heals.

You could also try poligrip strips. I have never used them, but I have read of them here. You could use them to stick the lips together, giving the surrounding area time to heal.

I started using the Aquaphor yesterday & it's helped already. However, do you know what I can do to prevent this from happening again. Do you think the poligrip strips would help?

I just be sure to coat the area very well with chapstick. When I notice a little redness(or soreness) I use the aquaphor.

taping

Post by gardenrebecca » Sat Feb 16, 2008 2:45 pm

I tape... and use 3m's medipore soft clorth surgical tape... only one that doesn't in the long run mess up my mouth... then in the morning i put on some nature's gate tea tree lotion, and i'm good to go. the tape i'm using has an added advantage... its scored, so a 2 inch piece is just right... then i turn over the corners so i can rip it off in a hurry. dr. decided with me that it was the only useable option.
