How do I change the pressure setting on my CPAP?
How do I change the pressure setting on my CPAP?
I have used a CPAP for 5+ years. Recently this forum suggested I get a new mask, as mine was the original one. My CPAP setting was 13. The DME guy required a prescription. The sleep lab had my records in cold storage. After 6 weeks, they still had not been retrieved, so I agreed to a new titration. The doc insisted I now need a 9. The DME guy changed my Remstar ancient machine to 9 when I got the new mask (finally). I feel claustrophobic on this lower setting. Plus I am tired and want to stay in bed longer--in fact my husband, after 2 months on this lower setting is calling me "slug-a-bed". The doc won't take a phone message--if I want to talk to him, I have to schedule an $80 appointment. I just got a heated humidifier and the DME guy tried to get through to the doc on my behalf re this. No luck. The DME guy says he can't change the setting without a prescription. Well, some of you guys know how to do this--viz. the APAP vs CPAP study that I just read. Please tell me!!

Melody,
I'm not sure if its the same on yours but the say what you don't want to do is unplug the machine and hold the two gray buttons down and plug it back in because this could get you into a menu option you don't want and make sure you don't wait until the machine beeps while holding them down. Its unfortunate but I guess I'm not the only one feeling like these Dr.s want your money and could care less if the treatment works or not. good luck and remember don't try the above

To Change pressure on CPAP
Hello
If you feel that your current pressure's not working on your cpap, then it's time for another vist to the sleep Dr! As we are not allowed change the pressure by oursleves and that includes the cpap provider!
Your Dr needs to write you a script or more likely, perscripton on what pressure he/she wants your cpap machinge set on. It like going the GP dr. when you unwell and he/she writes a script on what medicine the dr wants you on.
Then after obtaing the script indicating what pressure dr wants you on you then go to your cpap provider take your machine along with you too and give em the script and they will change the pressure of the cpap for you, according with what's written on the Dr's perscription.
Good luck

I was really surprised to see that answer!!!
I think one of the main things we have learned by reading all the latest information regarding CPAP therapy and all the input from the hundreds of contributors to this forum, is that we certainly CAN change the pressure! This business that, "....we are not allowed to change the pressure by ourselves," is... well, quite frankly, just that--BUSINESS. (And BIG business, at that!) One has only to read the threads--even on just the first page of today's forum, to see how invaluable taking control of your own treatment (i.e. CPAP machine pressure) can be.

Melody I would also drop those so called Doctors of yours and find someone that will give you good medical care!
I guess I'm spoiled because I feel my sleep Docs and everyone in the lab is doing a great job. Especially compared to what I hear on this board. The lab techs are giving me suggestions on the pressure settings I should use and offering to show me how to change the settings if I don't know how. Which since I bought my machine from cpap.com I have all the manuals, so I do know how to set everything on it. The Dr said I only needed a CPAP but if I wanted to order an Auto that was fine with her. They are giving me guidance and advice to help me solve this problem, not dictating to me.
I'm appalled at the treatment the so called medical professionals are giving so many in here. Start voting with your feet folks, there are good Sleep Dr's out there!

Melody,
If you want to drive about 90 miles south, there is a good doctor in Bowling Green. Walter Warren, he is my doctor. He has been very supportive and open to suggestions I make regarding my treatment. Always takes the time to listen to me, never rushes.
