This is a very old original post (2008) but....Inhaling filtered air that is moisturized by tap water won't hurt you. The distilled water is to keep your humidifier free from mineral build up...

What about the tap water that your furnace humidifier uses to humidify your home?
What about the tap water that is used in room humidifiers and vaporizers?
What about the tap water that you shower with and inhale the humid air?

well, that explains it.. a tiny bit of knowledge in a tangentially related field... worst kind there is.

yeah, and let's not forget, that when the water evaporates out of the humidifier... well, gee, that's the first half of distillation!

Unfortunately, for the two nights preceding the cruise, I'm staying at a hotel with no stores within walking distance, so I have to bring water for those first two nights.

I got a prescription for bottles of distilled water (the easiest way to get it through), but the morons at CVS can't seem to figure out the concept of making labels that say "Distilled Water for CPAP") (duh!). So today, I called TSA, and a man named "Cory" swears that I can get one or two half-liter bottles through without a problem. However, the only thing that the TSA is consistent in is its inconsistency.

So... can I take water through with documentation from the CPAP manufacturer and the doctor? Has anyone else here done this?
While I agree TSA can be inconsistent I will also say that what "Cory" said is correct and you don't need a Dr.'s note (though that won't hurt). OR you can take less in your carry-on and put more in your checked luggage (if you are checking any) or just check the water. Keep in mind the 3-1-1 TSA rules applies only to carry-on.

given how *ridiculously* easy it is to clean a water chamber... (vinegar and wait) adding *pounds* to my luggage seems like a really dumb idea.

a pint's a pound, the world around...

likewise, a liter is a kilo... (when talking water)

Which proves that water is not the same the world over.
Neither one of you two ever travels but both like to argue doesn't matter about what.
Ever heard of the "brain-eating amoeba"?
Worried about infectious microbes blamed for three recent deaths?
Why does it matter what others do? You can't control the world or what others do.

well, people who's brains haven't been eaten by the amoeba, (unlike you), are smart enough to understand the difference between drinking contaminated water (Moctezuma's Revenge) [sic] (and might even be able to spell it right), and inhaling the vapor from the water, water vapor which evaporates off the water in the tank, the first step in distillation.

likewise, people who's brains actually function, unlike yours, could conceptualize the difference in squirting water with amoebas in it up your nose, and breathing pure water vapor that's evaporated off the water in the tank... again, the same water vapor that is later condensed in the distillation process.

water vapor coming off the humidifier does not contain the microbes that irritate the digestive tract, so cannot cause Montezuma's revenge, nor can it possibly carry brain eating, or any other sort, of amoebas.

I'm not trying to tell people what to do, just that wagging around several extra pounds of water is dumb.

I'd say 'stop posting stupid shit" but, we all know you won't, because it's all you ever do.

I always use distilled water at home, but it's not always feasible when traveling. I generally use bottled water when traveling, especially outside the U.S. (don't put water in the tank that you wouldn't drink). When I get home, I wash out the tank thoroughly!

Distilled water is preferable, but not always feasible during travel.

Years ago, ehen 7 family members traveled to rural Ukraine for a month,
I was the only person who never drank well water unless it had first been boiled.
I was also the only one to avoid getting the trots. I know what works.
But that is for DRINKING water. Let us not get confused.

There is a loophole. Freeze the water. It is then no longer a liquid. Been doing this for several years now with liquid foods.
