What causes you to have a dry mouth, when you wake up in the morning.
I have a heated cpap and wake up in the morning with my mouth feeling like i am cotton mouthed.

You say "heated" -- does that mean you have a heated humidifier?

A humidifier helps. But if you're a mouth breather and you're using a nose mask, then you might have a problem with dry mouth, and also with getting good treatment.

Mouth leaks

Post by snork1 » Tue May 10, 2005 8:28 pm

assuming that does mean heated humidifier.
MOST of the time a dry mouth means a "mouth leak". i.e. the therapy air is blowing out your mouth.
A Full face mask will sometimes help with the therapy keeping up with the leakage, but you COULD still end up with a dry mouth with all the air blowing through your mouth.

Mouth leaks is one of the major issues with CPAP compliance. There are a lot of approaches to trying to stop mouth leaks, including:
Chin straps (under lip versus under chin)
Tape
Tongue training
DIY mouthguards
Any Combo thereof and probably a few I forgot.

Do a site search on:
Mouth leaks
Mouth breathing
DIY
DIY mouthguards
and probably a few things I forgot.

There is lots of help, although this is sometimes a tough one to lick.

I am waiting for my Chinstrap to come in the mail though. Looking forward to no dry mouth.

Another thing to look at. The humidifier has settings. I have mine all the way up(5). Maybe yours is set lower. Since I take some meds that cause mouth dryness I need all the moisture I can get.

Dry Mouth

I use a full face mask and still get dry mouth. I should add that I keep my humidifier set pretty high. So it is not AS BAD as it used to be.

In my quest for relief I found a tube of gel at the pharmacy called OralBalance which lubricates the mouth. This has provided additional relief and may help others who are not aware of its existence.

I used a chinstrap for the first time last night, and what a difference. My mouth was not nearly as dry as usual in the morning. I also felt a little better. Must have been noncompliant a lot. My wife can sleep better without the sound of the Lincoln Tunnel lying next to her.
