apnea equipment experience

Post by capt » Mon May 09, 2005 1:58 pm

I just wanted to state some of the experiences I have had since I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. From reading about the experiences that many people have had by having to go to a sleep clinic, I think that I was very fortunate that I did not have to go to a sleep clinic to be diagnosed. I was able to take the machine home and then have the results analysed later. The auto cpap machine that I happened to use for this evaluation was made by DeVilbiss. I started using DeVilbiss Auto LT as my auto cpap, because it made such a immediate difference in my life. The first mask I had was a Serenity, also manufactured by DeVilbiss. I found that this mask was OK, as far as comfort goes, but it was not very durable. When a seal splits or tears in less than a month, it becomes an expensive proposition. I then tried the Gold Seal mask. It was not very comfortable for me due to its weight, and the pressure that had to be applied by the headgear to make it seal. The next mask I tried was the Ultra Mirage. I found it to be the best mask for me. It was comfortable and it was very durable. I went for two years with no part breaking or needing any type of replacements . When a part finally broke, it was the cushion clip.

I just replaced my six year old DeVilbiss LT with an AutoSet Spirit and three year old Ultra Mirage mask with an Activa Mask. I have found the AutoSet Spirit to be an unbelievably quiet machine with many easy to make adjustments. It did take me about four days to get used to the Activa Mask. It was hard for me to realize how much less pressure from the headgear was required compared to the Ultra Mirage.

I made my equipment upgrade with the help of the staff at CPAP.COM. I must say from this experience, that they are the best!

Have you compared the software reports of your old and new apaps? I am also considering an upgrade.

Onlyme, I did and the reports were so close to one other that I could not use performance as a reason to upgrade. I would have to use the noise reduction and the ability to have a built in heated humidifier as reasons to justify the upgrade.
