Hiya, Folks.
I've been able to offload my sons from the computer for a couple of minutes to try and do some research on sleep apnea. In an on-line brochure from the American Sleep Apnea Association I found reference to the following:
...the Food and Drug Administration has approved a thin seal, also made of a gel-like material with wound-healing promotion characteristics as well, that can be attached to one line of masks. The seal usually lasts two to four weeks, depending upon care of the seal. Again, it is intended to alleviate pressure points and to be more comfortable.
Does anyone know what this is? Is it generally available, or only with one variety of mask? Is it effective/ineffective?
My partner, my two sons and myself went to the Melbourne Aquarium today (it's our summer school holidays - and this was the price I had to pay for watching the Aussie Tennis Open on the tellie this arvo). As I watched the sharks circling over my head, for some reason my thoughts turned to the sleep industry. I can't imagine why!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know what it is, but here in the US you can buy Mack's Silicone Ear Plugs, roll one in your hands into a thin rope or tape shape and lay it on your mask where it lays on your skin and it provides an excellent seal and will last for 2-3 days.

My computer says I need to upgrade my brain to be compatible with its new software.

You should have done what I did when I was there Christmas '05, and gone to the big Casino down the street and played the pokeys and watched cricket while the wife and kids went to the Melbourne Aquarium. It was much more fun blow'n the froth off a few than lookin at the worlds largest squid!

Sharks & sleep apnea-except for the equipment makers/suppliers not sure about that connection.
Connection between diving masks and XPAP masks is a silicone mask sealant designed for diving masks that some of us experimented with last summer. Rather expensive, it melted in the mail, softened the mask, and made my face water repellant; though it did help the hybrid stay on my face better than without. There is a silicone pipe sealant with similar properties. You can find it in hardware stores. It has some ominous sounding ingredients but they are in makeup too.
This sounds like the type of material used to make the actual seal-not something to be applied. Doesn't sound like anything I've used in wound care-but it has been a looong time and one has hopes the health care makes some progress.

Hi all,
This sounds like it may be a product called Silipos.I attempted to build my own mask (out of frustration) a year ago and found this in a local pharmacy for lots of applications, but none big enough for a mask seal.It is very expensive and I sent them numerous emails for samples to experiment with. They don't seem to want to deal with Joe public as all my messages went unanswered.Think they stole my idea? Anyway here is a link to their site.
