Hi, I just got back from another overnight test + a next-day Multiple Sleep Latency Test (where they only let you try to sleep at 8AM, 10AM, 12PM, 2PM)... (I've already been on CPAP for about 8 months.)
What do you think my doctor will conclude from the following results?
They woke me at 6AM, fed me breakfast, and at 8AM gave me a 20-minute period to see if I would fall asleep. I did, so they let me sleep for a little bit after the 20 minute period ended. Ditto for the 10AM test -- I fell asleep. I didn't fall into REM either time though (which I think rules out narcolepsy).
For the 12PM and 2PM tests, I didn't fall asleep at all, so they roused me out of bed after the 20-minute period was up. They cancelled the 4PM test (I think because I never hit REM in any of the 4 nap tests), and sent me home.
What does all that tell them -- Fell asleep 2 out of 4 tries, but without entering REM. I guess it rules out narcolepsy, but will it also lead them to some other diagnosis?
(I'm most curious to see what the overnight study, at my usual home pressure of 6cm, will show. No PLM apparently, per the tech (unofficially), so I guess that's positive.)
Thanks!
MSLT test (Daytime Nap Test) -- what do you think?
MSLT
You're right, John, based on what you've said, your results would not qualify for a diagnosis of Narcolepsy. The fact that you did sleep at 2 of the morning naps, and how long it took you to fall asleep, may indicate to your doctor your degree of residual daytime sleepiness.
