Thanks, DreamStalker. I knew there would be some obvious answer my thinking cap couldn't quite decipher. Duh.

I can't resist telling you all this.....
Went to see the Pulmonolgist Monday. While waiting, noticed the oximeter. Figured out how to use it. Used it for a few minutes. Took it off before she got in so I wouldn't get in trouble.
She checked me, and I admitted I'd played with it, and asked about the numbers going up and down, and she said that was normal.
BTW - my numbers went from 94-98, constantly fluctuating. I guess that's acceptable tolerance. She didn't see anything wrong with it.
Anyway, later I'm with the RT, doing a breathing test and we're chatting, and I mentioned this all to her, and she told me that they have a problem WITH PATIENTS STEALING OXIMETERS! I was so shocked. They know it's patients, because they are missing right after the appointment. It's not a break-in. I asked her if they are selling them, and she says no, she thinks they just WANT THEM and they are too expensive to buy.
Anyway, not that this does anything for anyone, I just wanted to share. I feel so sorry for that person who feels so desperate about their therapy that they'd do that. I can really sympathize.
Cheers,
Babs

Hmmmm. I don't get that kind of fluctuation w/my Nonin Onyx finger oximeter for my 02 sats and I have COPD!! The figures do fluctuate a bit for the first couple of seconds and then stabilize w/maybe an 02 fluctuation of 1% one way or the other.
The bottom figure, tho, the pulse rate, does fluctuate quite a bit and a 4% fluctuation of that wouldn't be out of line for me. I've found w/the Nonin that the HR (pulse rate) fluctuation is more pronounced w/movement than the 02 unless we are talking actually getting up and walking around or something. But just hand movement ... the HR influenced more than the 02.
And my Nonin is rechecked against the hospital's or doctor's oximeter every time I go to one or the other. Its always been accurate w/in 1-2% of theirs which is an acceptable variation.

Uh, uh. False premise then. You didn't mention in between coughing. Coughing is effort, coughing is movement, coughing is stress, coughing is interfering w/breathing. I agree w/your pulmo and the office oximeter, in that situation a fluctuation between 94%-98% of 02 saturation wouldn't be out of line at all.

Questions for pulse oximeter users:
1. Besides the ability to download/record/report your readings, what are the differences between the wrist model vs. the nonin fingertip model? Why would you purchase one vs. the other?
2. Do you know if medicare will pay for a pulse oximeter if your doc writes a script for it?
Thanks! My Dad has COPD and using a pulse oximeter at home would certainly help with his care.

To the best of my knowledge, Medicare will not pay for an oximeter even for those on 02 24x7. Nor will any insurance I've heard of. Your dad should be able to go to mymedicare.gov and check his benefits and whether they would supply one or not. Straight from the horses's mouth is always the best source. Ask his pulmonologist as well.IndyJudy wrote:Questions for pulse oximeter users:

I "think" the only Nonin finger tip model is what I have, well a newer version is out now. I have the Nonin Onyx, that was followed by the 9500 and I'm not sure if there is yet a newer version. Not that much difference between the Onxy and the 9500 to be worth the price difference. They are just for spot checks. No recording abilities, only what appears on the Nonin LED at the time.
I saw where the wrist model does have recording capabilities but it requires the additonal cost of software/cable. Nonin is one of the best if not the best out there, but they "ain't" cheap.
As with CPAPs, the companies don't want patients to ahve access to the software and thus its priced accordingly IF it can be found at all. SPO Medical pretty much changed all that w/the advent of their SPO 7500 and Nonin seems to have responded to SPO's "challenge" by coming out w/their wrist ox and software, but the software is separate and expensive.
