If water is used up while sleeping?

Post by shardebhow » Tue Jan 08, 2008 11:01 am

Is there any damage, other then lack of humidity (which might cause discomfort and wake you up?), if your humidifier runs out of water while you are sleeping??? Like, water tank bottom starts burning? The heating area burns out? Stuff like that. The concern comes if you have a humidifier with "on the small side" water chamber.

It isn't supposed to damage the humidifier.
I find though that the smell wakes me up every time!
I've only had it happen a few times in the last year, though.

Interesting that this occurs w/the F&P 600 integrated heated humidifier too. It happens on occasion w/the Respironics and the Resmed integrated heated humidifiers too. Hard to beat the F&P HC 100 & 150 stand alone heated humidifiers at times like that. Those babies never seem to run into that problem unless, of course, one forgets to fill them fully before using them. Guess we just have to accept it on occasion in return for the convenience of size and travel advantages.

People have mentioned that before but with my ResMed Elite S8 I never fill up the tank and have never ran out of water. Even if I turn mine up to the point of getting rain I don't run out of water overnight.
Is it just that some humidifiers use more water or what?

Nope. It depends on how dry the environment in your sleeping room is.

I think leaks and mouth breathing affect it, too.

I consider it to be fairly dry here. Not desert but during some times of the year, pretty dry.

JJPosey quite likely could be right about leaks and mouth breathing having some affect as well. Good thought, JJ! With a lotta leaks or mouth breathing you'd feel dry and be inclined to keep your humidifier turned higher, thus using more water than if you could comfortably turn you humidifier down lower.
