Which Full Face Mask..Mirage Series 2 or Ultra Mirage ?

Post by Newsgrouper » Thu May 05, 2005 5:48 am

I need to order a full face mask (for mouth leak) and am confused between the Ultra Mirage Full Face Mask and the Mirage Series 2 Full Face Mask. Which one should I buy?

I cannot recommend the Ultra Mirage II full face mask. There are numerous posts on this subject.
I am going to try the Hans Rudolph full face mask since my Ultra Mirage kept my future husband awake until I turned off my Cpap Machine. When I told him what I did, he was furious with me.

The Mirage makes all kinds of noises and most of them are obscene.

Newsgrouper, I've had very good treatment with the ResMed Ultra Mirage FF (full face mask) on congested nights when I wanted to use a FF mask for mouth breathing.

I've not ever tried any of the older "Mirage Series II" masks by ResMed. The newer Ultra Mirage line was already out by the time I was looking for masks, so the Ultra Mirage FF was what I bought and have been well pleased with it.

Some who had problems with a whistling sound from the exhalation port of some Ultra Mirage FF masks contacted ResMed directly and were sent a new membrane to put in it. I don't know if that always worked to solve the whistling problem or not. Maybe I was lucky. Mine never has done that.

NOISES

Post by ballast949 » Thu May 05, 2005 12:14 pm

What are your pressure settings? I am assuming the noise you are talking about is the air cushions, not the exhalation port. My Mirage Ultra Series 2 makes farty/squealy noises at high pressures unless I tighten down the straps to the point past uncomfortable.

A layer of tissue paper under the cushions seems to help a lot, but if I don't get it just right, I have a stray piece of tissue inside the mask fluttering against my nose - almost as bad as getting a stray hair inside the mask.

Series II Full Face vs. UltraMirage FF

Post by Grant I » Fri May 06, 2005 10:03 am

Newsgrouper:
Allow me to weigh in on this one--I used a ResMed Series II full face for 18 months, then switched to the ResMed UltraMirage full face in March. The switch was brought on by increased eye leakage from the Series II that became unbearable. After a month of the Ultra, and fighting nightly to prevent the leaks mentioned above (specifically if NOT on my back) I went back to the Series II. Even though I didn't have as much noticeable trouble sleeping on my side, after 4 nights of major large leaks, an increase in snore index from 5-6 to 30, and a jump in my AHI from 2-3 to 7-8, I returned to the Ultra.
Once again, went through the sequence of mask fitting outlined in their CD. In my earlier attempts, I had adjusted the split upper strap so the top half of the strap rested below the occipital protuberance (the "bump" on the back of the skull). This left the lower half of the upper strap lax. This time, I adjusted the upper strap so that both halves were equally "snug" on either side of the "bump". This solved the majority of my side sleeping leaks. I'm a born-again believer in the UltraMirage FF! Next stop--3M tape on the bridge of my nose!

The Series II headgear attaches in 5 places vs 4--without quick-release clips. At my higher pressures (was at 12 CPAP for the previous 18 months) I had to really cinch the straps down on the Series II.

BTW: I have the RemStar Auto at 14/18 with avg pressure of 16-17; average AHI for past month is 2.3

There was a suggestion on making a toilet seat cover out of tissue to fit the Ultra Mirage mask.

I made the tissue cover but my intended was afraid of this so he gave me one of his old bandana handkerchiefs. I made four of these seat covers or what ever you want to call them. I even used the zigzag stitch to make sure the material would not fray.

I could not believe the difference this one layer made with this obscene noise making mask.

I slept until 3:30AM when I woke up for a nature call and I went right back to sleep.

That cover or whatever the name of it, made a world of difference and my intended never said one word about a noisy mask.

My next mask will definitely be the Hans Rudolph.

Severeena:

Have you heard any feedback from anyone about the Hans Rudolph FF?

It looks really great and seems that it would meet my needs (i.e., no vision obstruction), but at double the price of the other masks it seems risky just to plunge in without knowing more about it.

So if you have heard anything, please share.
