Dry mouth = Up your humidity

Post by Babette » Tue Jan 01, 2008 8:12 pm

You know, when I first logged on here, I quickly copped to the joke about raising your humidity. It's the standard line most RT's, docs, DME's give patients when they complain about ANYTHING! "Turn up your humidity!" Yeah, right....

Well, I hate hot air in my face. I've been running passover since my first few nights on the hose.

Lately, I've been having RIDICULOUS dry mouth. And I am pretty sure I'm not mouth breathing. I can't prove that, but my mom says she didn't see me mouth breathing, I wasn't dry before, my numbers are low, etc. etc.

Well, I've been slowly cranking my humidity up, to see if that would help. I'm at 3 now, and last night was the best yet. Little to no dry mouth. AND... surprise surprise! NO rainout!

I'm not sure WHY I'm not having rainout, but probably a combination of learning to leave the heat on at night (I used to always turn it off before bed, oh well, there goes my "greener" status) and the new fabulous snuggle hoses on my NAII (THANK YOU SLEEPYCAROL!) are combining to make me rain-free.

So, the dope slap is on me. Raising humidity DOES work. Even for us anti-humidity types. Oh, and BTW, I really haven't noticed hot moist air in my face, like I used to. Maybe I'm just USED TO IT now. I dunno. It's not bugging me like it used to.

So, that's my story. Maybe it will help you this winter.

Cheers,
Babs

Babs,

I thought "that was your story and you were sticking by it"

Have you received the last package I sent yet?

I probably need to see if my humidifier would help as I am like you and don't turn it on but use it as a passover.

YES! and THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was OVERWHELMED! You're far too sweet to me!!!!!

Sorry for the slow response, been having computer problems and have spent way too much time the last few days trying to fix them. And no, I still can't get the blasted computer to recognize the MP3 player... sigh... At least the PCI card installation worked and didn't seem to screw anything else up.

I'm NOT going to spend $1,000 on a new computer just to download music to a $40 MP3 player!!!!!!!!!!

LOL,
Babs

Our local Big Lots had an MP3 player on sale when I was there Sunday -- I looked at it and thought of you and then shook my head as I knew I would never be able to figure it out.

If you do not want the hose cover and the extra NA snuggles pass them on. I figured you are generous and what you didn't want you would send them on to good homes.

Mine, too. In the past I slept with my heat set to 52 degrees with a setback thermometer. I enjoy sleeping with a lot of blankets and cold air. The rainout was bad even with the Aussie heated hose at those temps, and this was in the Fall, not winter. Now, I actually turn it up to 64 before going to bed. This has doubled my energy use (and my utility bill) . Plus I wake up too warm half the time .

But the humidity has solved many of my dryness problems. Before cpap, the other dryness was that I could never drink enough water during the day, but always felt thirsty. At night I was always getting up with a full bladder even though I never drank before bedtime. Now I rarely get up at night. I think I was often dehydrated even though I drank a lot of water. Amazing!

I use a regular hose cover OVER my Aussie Heated hose--that really takes care of the rainout in a cold room (well, at least down to 60 degrees F, lowest I've had in the house so far this winter).
