Laryngitis and xPAP

Post by Perchancetodream » Tue Jan 01, 2008 6:53 pm

My husband and I have both been suffering from a cold for the last ten days. He has been unable to tolerate his CPAP and spent last night sleeping in his recliner.

I have continued to use my machine, but with the nasal congestion I have been mouth breathing. Since I am using the Hybrid, the mouth breathing has not cost me anything in OSA therapy, but this morning I woke up with a sore throat and laryngitis.

I am doing self care at home, giving my voice (as well as my husband ) a break, taking tylenol, drinking fluids, etc.

But, should I continue to use the BiPAP? I normally only use passover humidification, but, even with using the heated humidity, would it do more harm than good? The pressures are pretty high, and with the cold I do some light snoring which causes the EPAP to go up.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Susan

I've been using my machine during two cold/flu bouts this winter. One strategy I've used is to make sure to sleep on my side. That way the top nostril stays clear and I can do more nose breathing. I did use the Liberty and did get a sorer throat from the mouth breathing, but think that getting the rest I need is going to help me heal faster.

That's just me, though. I'm pretty new at this. Perhaps others will say something different.

Up until I got my current crud... I would have said use it if you can hack it. With my current crud, well... you'll need sleep in order to get better. If you can sleep without it and can't breathe with it... then don't use it. If you can't sleep without it... then keep trying.

November I had bronchitis, December a sinus infection (still fighting this one).

I find warm humid air very helpful when my throat is inflamed.

if you have repeat bouts of Laryngitis, I would consider and address a Acid Reflux condition, I would also take steps to reduce its impact, like elevating the head of the bed etc.
someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

According to my ENT, my larynx is swollen due to GERD. I'm on Prilosec twice a day.

Last night I cranked up the humidity and wore the mask again. My throat is less sore than it was yesterday and my voice is much improved.

Thanks for your input. This has been the worse cold that I can ever remember having. It has taught me one thing, though. I really prefer to sleep with the mask on.
