Dear CPAP folk - I have read a lot of posts on this site and have found a lot fo helpful advice to try. CPAP has not been an easy experience: even at the sleep test I had trouble with aerophagia. Aerophagia continues to be a huge problem, but it kicked up silent acid reflux, so now I am on prescription meds for that.
However, after struggling through CPAP for a month, I was diagnosed with mono! I have tried to continue therapy through the sore throat and fatigue. I have also had to sterilize my mask and hoses ever;y day.
So, question: does anyone know if CPAP can cause an infection like mono/cmv?

Cpap can not cause mono.
A lowered immune system can increase your risk of getting mono. My sister was in early grade school when she had an episode of it. She ended up missing several days of school as the doctor told my mother to keep her home if she was overly tired.

Glandular fever of infectious mononucleosis is an acute infectious disease caused by a virus of the herpes group.
It occurs at any age but usually in people between the ages of 12 to 35. Mild attacks are common in young children. It is not a highly contagious disease. The virus is transmitted only by close contact such as kissing. In past years attacks tended to be more isolated. However, in the past 20 years, attacks tend to come as epidemics often in late spring and early summer. An attack may be associated with a lowered resistance to infection through a general state of debility due to stress, overwork, lack of sleep and a break down in the body’s immune system.

I'm sick, too. Either flu or a cold. I got the Control III solution kit from cpap.com and will be using it to sterlize everything. In the meantime, you can use vinegar, though it's not great for your mask, it will help with some germs.
There's no way to get mono from using cpap. I guess if you used someone else's equipment you could get an illness (though not one where direct contact is needed which I think mono is). It's unlikely that any of us are using other people's equipment.
I hope you fight if off successfully. Here's some info on it from a website I like to use to look up health information

I guess it really depends who you share your mask with?MinerMomx3 wrote:So, question: does anyone know if CPAP can cause an infection like mono/cmv?

I have no doubt, how I sleep affects every waking moment.
I am making progress-NOW I remember that I can't remember

If this isn’t rocket science why are there so many spaceshots?

So sorry you're sick. Mono really sucks. Mono is viral, so a CPAP can't give it to you. It is also only transmissible through saliva (hence it is referred to as the kissing disease). Not to mention the incubation period is 4-6 weeks, so you were probably exposed before you started CPAP.
Also, while one should clean their mask daily anyways, you can't re-give yourself mono (goes to the viral infection), so obsessive sterilization may not be necessary (unless you are worried about getting a bacterial infection too). Do be careful with mono because it can cause a person's lymph nodes to swell, and occasionally, make a person's throat swell shut. Both of these can make CPAP less effective. Since mono makes you tired, I'm not sure you'd even really notice though.
Hope you feel better.
Sarah
P.S. Mono virus can stay in your saliva for up to 6 months, so no kissing for you anytime soon.
