Pedometers: I have a love/hate relationship with 'em!
Lots of them are very prone to dropping, breaking, skipping steps, doubling up on steps, etc. I finally found a $20 Omron that worked well. It has a tether besides the belt clip so it doesn't hit the ground when the belt clip slips off. Supposedly one can carry it in a purse and still get reasonable readings (haven't tried that 'cause I like to look at it periodically).
When I use a pedometer I find I get in more steps during the day. It becomes a game

I had the same model Omron and it was very helpful as a motivator. I set my goal at 10,000 steps a day. That meant that at work, I'd take things to people's offices and drop them off rather than put them in inter-office mail , or want to the furthest possible restroom, always taking the stairs, pushing the grocery cart back to the grocery store, etc. You just begin to pick out ways to get in the steps. I got in a lot of my steps at work, but also on regular walks. In the winter I can't walk outdoors, but did a lot of walking at the mall. After a while I was consistently doing 10,000 steps a day. I did build up gradually, though. One day I did a lot of walking and felt exhausted. I looked at the pedometer and it was well over 20,000 steps, LOL. I never worried about miles, I just used it to motivate me to walk more.

After 4 months of treatment, I bought an exercise bike and have ridden it every day for 35 minutes a day since January 21st. I knew going to a gym wasn't an option for me (I have a 6 year old, I don't have to "dress up" to work out, I don't waste time going to and from.) I usually watch TV or read to pass the time. A great book makes the time virtually fly by.
