Brand Newbie needs M Series Auto Feedback
Brand Newbie needs M Series Auto Feedback
I'm new to CPAP and have an M Series Auto. It was set up at my provider's office in CPAP mode w/ Cflex. My pressure setting is 12, and I do have the ramp feature enabled at 7.
First off, what is the difference between this and A flex? Auto Mode?
Also, I struggle sleeping with any noise in my room. Everything I read said this machine model was good for noise. But the revving sound the machine makes as it fluctuates from a low pitch on exhale and higher pitch on inhale is preventing me from sleeping and driving me nuts.
Unfortunately, I do not have any point of reference. Is this actually considered one of the quieter machines in user circles? Should I be hearing the revving sound and just need to get used to it, or is this possibly defective? The machine that I used during my sleep study had no noise - all I heard was the whistling of the air flowing out of the release valve, which was just fine. They told me my M auto is supposedly better than that one.
Thanks for any help.

The difference between ramp (your current setting) and auto is:
Ramp increases pressure from the initial rate (7) to the pressure setting (12) over time.
Auto attempts to adjusts the pressure to respond to your events (within the range) to mitigate them.
I suggest you look at respironics site for information on difference between aflex and clex and basic information on their auto algorithm

I have the Rem Series machine, not Auto, but it is very quiet except that I can hear myself breathing like you. At first it bothered me a great deal. Now, after 3 months, I dont even realize it is on. I tried turning on a fan in the room to muffle the noise a bit. That helped.

I have the same machine and I thought it was kind of noisy but thought it was just something I would have to get used to. Then after about 4 months, I turned it on one night and the LED light on the humidifier was flashing. I took the machine into my privider and found out there was a defect and they replaced my machine.
The new machine was much quieter - in fact my husband asked me if it was on!
If I were you, I'd take your machine in and just ask them to check it. There may be something wrong with it or it may not have been set up properly.

timmat,
I suggest you click on the Profile button at the top of the forum and fill in the information about your machine and mask.
I have an M Series Auto with C-FLEX. I am very sensitive to sound and it bothered me for some weeks -- I can't remember how long, but I did get used to it. Like jsmythe, I now run a table top fan at night to create some white noise. Sometimes the inhale and exhale sounds you hear have to do with the mask, not the machine. My second favorite mask, the ComfortLite 2 is very quiet. Unfortunately, my favorite mask, the Headrest, is noisy. However, I have gotten used to that as well.
You may want to try wearing ear plugs. There are a number of goods ones available.
m1k2s3 could be right -- There could be a defect in your machine. You said the machine used in your sleep study was quiet. Was it also an M Series Auto? Are you using the same mask you wore in the sleep study? But if you are like me, every little noise was bothersome when I was trying to get used to CPAP.
Good luck. Let us know how you are doing.
