I had heard reference to the different types of sleep tests but only tonight ran across a formal definition:
Type I: attended, or in-facility PSG
Type II: Monitors have a minimum of 7 channels (e.g., EEG, EOG, EMG, ECG-heart rate, airflow, respiratory effort, oxygen saturation-this type of device monitors sleep staging, so calculation of apnea/hypopnea index-AHI can be calculated).
Type III: monitors have a minimum of 4 monitored channels including ventilation or airflow (at least two channels of respiratory movement or respiratory movement and airflow), heart rate or ECG, and oxygen saturation.
Type IV: devices measure one or two parameters (e.g., oxygen saturation or airflow).
