Faulty machine?

Post by pberg3571 » Mon Dec 17, 2007 11:54 am

Hi all. I have a Fisher Paykel machine, and have been learning to deal with using it. Things haven't been going to bad, but in the last couple of weeks, it seems as though the machine is not supplying enough air. The excess air through my nasel pillow seems to be less than before, my ears don't hardly plug, sometimes I think I wake up having an apneia, (a little short of breath) and I have been told I am snoring againg very loudly. I rinsed the filter out, and it didn't help. I even tried no filter so I know there was no restriction, but it didn't seem to make a differance. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!

A couple of possibilities.....in this order:

You're leaking therapy air out your mouth. Tape, Polident adhesive denture strips or a full face mask.

If/when you make sure that you aren't leaking (anymore), you might need a little more pressure.

For sure no leaks...Is it something I could have gotten used to and need more pressure? If so, will it stop? Or will I constantly be bumping the pressure up?

What pressure is your machine supposed to be set to? It should show up in the display when it's running, I would think.
It could also be that you've gotten used to the pressure (a common symptom) and now it feels like it's less.
I wish I had a dollar for every new user that's posted that sensation.
You could always take it into your DME and have them test it with a manometer.

It is set at 10. This has only been with in the last week to a week and a half.

Unless your wife stays up all night watching you, I'm curious to know how you're so sure you're not mouth breathing when you're asleep?

I don't think "snoring again very loudly" can be the result of mouthleaking, but I may be wrong about that.

Having the machine checked is a good idea.

And no, you won't necessarily have to raise the pressure again and again endlessly.

I use the ol ace bandage trick, and never wake up with a dry mouth. When I was breathing through my mouth, I would wake up with VERY dry mouth. I guess I assume that there is no mouth leaking.

Seal that big hole under your nose and you'll know for sure.

Using a full face mask and a pressure of 10, I was able to generate some pretty sizeable snore indexes.....but still low AHI numbers.....and I KNEW that I wasn't mouth-leaking with that setup. By taking my pressure up to 12, I got rid of the snoring.
If you have any nasal congestion, try to clear your nasal passages before going to bed. It'll allow you to breathe better and reduce the snoring. If you're using your humidifier with heat, try dropping or shutting off the heat and see if that helps, too. Heated humidity can actually have the effect of closing up your nasal passages.

Your mileage may vary.

I just had a thought or two and followed the machine in your profile to the description in CPAP.COM.
I noticed that it does NOT have automatic leak compensation and it has a manual altitude adjustment.
You might want to go into the setup and see how things are set.

You may want to consider the age of the machine too. If under 2 years, most manufacturers offer a recertified replacement. Check it out as they have said, manometer, if low, contact where you purchased it for repair.
