Comfort Gel Nasal Mask. I need your expertise!

Post by Sundown » Wed Dec 12, 2007 3:39 pm

Hello:

I recently bought a brand new Comfort Gel Nasal Mask. I was very excited, it was so cool looking and comfortable. I opened it all up, popped in the cd and was really excited. Put it on the headgear and then adjusted straps. I attached it to my CPAP and ... well couldn't exhale. Nope. I thought it was just because it was a "different" mask then my F&P Flexifit 407..I was having a helluva time breathing OUT. So I looked carefully and it does NOT have the blue logo on the exhalation port. Please guys.. anyone that owns this mask, please let me know if you have a blue Respironics logo on the exhalation port, or if it is just hard to breath out of...

I contacted Respironics and they told me that they have no recent recalls.. they were useless.

It's the Comfort Full Gel Mask Small. Here is a pic.

I am wondering if the vent is on the little attached piece of the swivel. Is the port on the swivel itself or it is a little connector thing? Reason I ask is I have a mask that doesn't have a port for the exhaled co2 but it is on the little gizmo that you attach at the end of the swivel. I have one that apparently is defective on the little gizmo as no matter what you do you simply can not breath with it on. Same type of mask although not identical by the same company (at least it looks like the picture).

Hey Sundown,
I do note a little blue logo silk screened on the section where the exhaust port is on the mask. I don't see it in your photo.....
I have had no problem with exhalation.
What's chances you can exchange what you got for a different one?? (Same model).....
I wouldn't expect much from the Mfgr. As soon as they ship it, the problem is the distributors!!!

My only issue with the CG is the size. It tears up the bridge of my nose and it presses on my teeth on the lower end. I note yours is a small and that is exactly what I'm going to order -- a small gel and seal (it'll fit in same frame) and see if it works better!!! I do like the CG mask!!!! Worked well for 3 months before I got a Headrest (Aura).....

Good luck
cheers

hello---I have this same mask --no problems. Only I have the PETITE size--the small was not small enough for me. MY DME showed me the Petite size and it worked!! I have had no trrouble exhaling either--so maybe the elbow where the port is is clogged or twisted closed in some way. Oh BTW---I also use the F&P Flexifit 407--love it too---I switch on and off when I want a change as the forehead piece on the F&P Flexifit 407 does not bend and flex like the CG Petite ---

Yes, vent is on the little attached piece of the swivel, sort of.I dont know how it works, but it does. You cannot actually see any vent holes at all. But you can feel the forced air coming out. I have not had a problem with it.... yet.....

Mine is the same shape as this one, but no logo on it and the air should escape (vent) right under that little logo. I just can't breath out!!!

Hey Sundown,
That picture is precisely what I have.....It makes me wonder if because yours doesn't have the blue logo it didn't go through the whole manufacturing process and didn't get the vent hole cut (though I would think it would be put in during the molding process).....Something to check out......

good luck
cheers

Thank you for your help!

I am not sure what "blue logo" you are refering to, there is nothing like that on my mask.
The exhalation port is on the swivel where it connects to the mask. Mine is in front of me as I type and is exactly like the one in the photo. Unless you had the swivel covered in some way, you should be able to breathe fine. I have had mine about 2 months and love it.
jssmythe:

What size is yours? Is yours small? So the air comes out of it for you?? I am perplexed.

It's as simple as it gets, the vent is built into the elbow/connecter. You should be able to blow air through the connector both ways. (It has no flapper)

Hold it over the sink, connector down, cover the hose connector on the outside of the mask with your thumb. pour the water into the mask, the water should flow out of the elbow, even with your finger plugging the connector.

If so, hook the mask to the XPAP, turn it on air should flow into the mask.

If it passes both tests, it should work. If not take it back, strap it on the DME, and wait until he turns Blue, after a hour call 911. Jim

I just looked at all of our comfort gel masks that I just got in and they do not have a logo on the exhalation port. Where did you get this mask? I know a few years ago there was a recall by Respironics because the wrong valve was installed the masks didn't have an exhalation port. I would hope that most of those masks were recalled, but you never know. If you attach the mask to the machine, turn it on and block the nasal seal does air escape through the exhalation port?

I just blocked up the bottom part and a teeny bit of air did come through... but man... I just don't feel like I can breath at all! But none of yours has the logo? Are they the small ones or all different sizes? Have you gotten any complaints?

I promise the air just doesn't escape hardly at all.

Mine is a Small; there is no blue logo on it. Works just fine, I slept in it last night with no problems and no leaks. I know a couple more people who have one, and theirs do not have the logo either, and they have no problems with theirs. You may want to check out what KansasRT said.
