allergic reacrion

Post by mrs.b. » Sun Dec 02, 2007 7:42 pm

I am new to this and have a ResMed S Elite w/Humid Aire. I have not been able to go past 3 nights using my machine. By the third night I awake by 5 or 6AM with waterimg eyes, sometimes with matter in them, sneezing, runnig nose etc. I feel like I woke up with a real bad cold. The sneezing and watering eyes is somewhat reduced by takeing Benadryl but still lasts about 4 to 5 days. I was told to try it with the humidity this made no difference except the last time I used it I awoke with red blotches on my chin and cheek on the same side as the hose. I am thinking it has something to do with the hoses it is not the nasal pillows as there is no redness or irritation around my nose. Can anyone help? Any similar problems from anyone? I was also told by an Allergist I have no allergies???? Any help wpuld be greatly appreciated.

A few questions:

How long have you had it?
Did you get if from a local DME shop?
Was it a brand new machine? (or had it been previously used?)
Are the filters in place? And, are they brand new and clean?
Are you using ONLY "distilled water" in the humidifier?
Have you addressed this situation with the place you got it from and/or your doctor?

Good questions Den.

Just because you didn't test positive for the things the doctor exposed you to doesn't mean you don't have allergies. I am allergic to many things and believe me the testing was only the tip of the iceberg!! There are some things that are not practical for them to test for and so you have to go by your reaction to the allergen.

If it is the hose -- have you tried changing out the hose? I ordered a clear hose from eBay that is possibly has a different make-up from the one I got with my machine. Have you tried soaking your hose in a vinegar water solution to lessen the toxics that it releases? I think it is 3 parts water to one part vinegar. Let it soak a good long time ( several hours). Have you tried taking the Benadryl prior to hosing up?

As Den suggested speak with the DME and doctor.

Soak the hose in soapy water for 30-60 mins. use a mild soap - baby shampoo for instatnce.

Read your masks instructions - soak the mask for 30-60 mins too, unless the instrutction limit you to less.

Yes, I agree. The off-gassing of the new plastic components may be bothering you. Make sure also that you are using enough humidity. Too low might create the symptoms you describe.

The soaking advice is good. Personally, I would do several hours in warm soapy water. You can also hook the hose up to the machine and let it run without you being in the circuit. I do this to help mine dry out after washing. It dries all the condensation, but it could also help blow out some of the gasses that the plastic is releasing before you hook it up to your face.

And call your doctor and dme. For sure.
