CPAP effectiveness through one nostril

Post by cpaper » Thu Apr 28, 2005 6:47 am

Is CPAP equally effective through only one nostril?
I only ever have one nostril open when I lie down. The other closes up almost completely.

Would this effect how much pressure I should need?

Nasal congestion is common when lying down. Many use a steroid nasal spray at bedtime to do away with this. The fact that one nostril closes up (are you lying on your side with that side down?) could be that you have a deviated septum on that side or maybe even a nasal polyp.

Probably you are still getting some benefit from the air into the single nostril instead of both, but I would seek some kind of relief to "unclog" the other nostril. Deviated septums are not serious unless the deviation totally obstructs the passage. A polyp can be quite large and is better off removed.

clearing up

I started into CPAP with a one sided nose and the other side not working great either.

CPAP worked better than nothing at all, but after a year of trying EVERY trick in the book, and still not getting very good results, I finally found a GOOD ENT and got my nose and sinuses fixed and THEN found out what CPAP is REALLY supposed to do.
That was an ENT in ADDITION to my pulmonary sleep doc.

Trick is finding a GOOD ENT. If they suggest surgery without at least doing a nasal endoscopy and a CT scan of your sinuses...run, run like the wind.

Getting sinuses working whether its through a steroid spray like flonase, or simple saline flushes, or surgery is very important for getting CPAP working to its best advantage..but meanwhile getting SOME therapy is still much better than none at all, even with a one banger nose.

Hello

Any sort of blockage in the nose parital or total can be extremely uncomfortable the cpap user. As with me both side of my nose was totally blocked when I frist start cpap therapy as it took and hr or not all for my cpap pressure to force open my nose blockage, but I remove the mask it all block up again and back to square one!

I had tubinate reduction to open my airways, since that operation I am now able use the cpap and nasal mask comfortably as before it was uncomfortable having constant congestion or soild blocking of the nose. But I still snuffle!!! I guess the nickname "snuffle nose" is still current to me.
Been on CPAP for a while.....I had moderate apenoa

cpaper, one side or the other is always almost totally blocked for me, awake or lying down. I've not had it interfere with my treatment, though, so have not done anything about it. Haven't even tried any sprays or flushes. I'm walking proof that one clear nostril is enough for getting effective cpap treatment - if it's completely clear, that is!! Even if it's not always the same one.

A few years from now when I'm eligible for Medicare, I'll have it looked about. I'm sure it would be an even better feeling to breathe air freely in through both at the same time, but at least one totally clear nostril at a time can the job done.
