Re: Xyrem.

First, I am no Doctor so take my review of Xyrem with a appropriate consideration. Yes Xyrem is the 'date rape drug', when mixed with Alcohol the effect is overwhelming - you will fall deeply asleep. As such it is highly controlled and not prescribed often. All distribution comes from a central pharamacy (one in the US) which ships it to you and you need to sign for it.

As for Xyrem itself, it has remarkably few side effects (google it and you will find) - for me nothing other than it is a salt which raises blood pressure. The best part is that it is non habit forming unlike ALL other sleep aids. You also can not build up a tolerance. You do need to figure out your dose (through experimentation). It wears off in about 4 hours (for me closer to 5), and you will need a second dose during the night. Never mix Xyrem with alcohol too dangerous. It takes about 20 minutes to work, but usually I am asleep within 5 anyways

It is prescribed for extreme sleep considerations - those who can fall asleep at any time (forgot the term ). In my case, I had two conditions: my MLST where I fell alseep immediately after a 'good nights sleep', and that I have little REM 3 & 4 sleep, less than 5%. That caused my Doc to presrcibe it. I am sure my waking 30+ times a night helped and my Doc saw that my CPAP compliance was 100%, I had all the surgeries and tried everything else (loose weight, no caffiene, no alcholol, go to sleep at the same time, dark room, no disturbances etc. etc.).

What it did for me is simple, I now can sleep without waking up all the time I also dream much much more which is indicative of deep REM 3 & 4 stages. Result is I feel like a human most of the time having got a decent nights sleep.

Sorry for such a long explaination, but I wanted to share what I know so others can potentially benefit.

Thanks for clarifying and sharing info, Bear!

Personal experience may be considered "anecdotal evidence" but it is, nonetheless, an important part of information we evaluate.
