Sore throat & gassy?

Post by jqp » Thu Nov 22, 2007 9:48 am

Strange title... I know. I've had a problem with air bloating since I started the CPAP therapy. After about 6 hours, I'd wake up bloated.

I've had a sore throat & cold for a week or so now, and I notice it's severely worse. For instance, last night I put on my mask... within 10 minutes, I was so full of air, it hurt. I couldn't stand it. I felt like the evil Aunt in Harry Potter. I had to take the mask off and go it alone.

I'm wondering if a sore throat (ie the inflammation and irritation) could cause the esophagus to not seal off properly... causing the extreme bloating (much worse than usual).

Any thoughts?

Do a search on "aerophagia" and see how many threads there have been about it.

It's very individualistic.
You didn't say what your pressure was, but sometimes a little less pressure, turning C-Flex off (or to a different setting) may work. Also, sleeping position may make a difference.
In worse-case situations, folks have had to go to Bi-PAP machines.

My pressure is 13. I use C-flex on setting "2"... but that hasn't changed.

Hmmm... I noticed last night that somehow the C-flex setting got changed to "3"... it had been on "2". Maybe that had something to do with it.

For fun, I turned the pressure down from 13 to 12 and turned C-flex off.

The gassiness was much better this morning. I did notice my AHI went from 1 to 2 last night... still pretty respectable.

sore throat and gassy

Post by peteysmom » Fri Nov 23, 2007 6:18 pm

I hate to admit it, but maybe the CPAP is what's making me gassy--I never thought about that being the cause--I just figured it was the colas I was drinking. I am a respiratory therapist and do CPAP setups for a DME company. I am also CPAP wearer. I guess YOU guys will have to educate me so I can be more effective for my patients!!! I also just found out that quite a few users put duct tape over their mouths to keep them closed.

Hi peteysmom. Welcome to the forum.
You may find out quite a few things that could go "against the grain" from what you've been taught.......just thought I'd warn ya. In any case, this group is primarily concerned with helping "hoseheads" succeed with their therapy......with whatever works. Another thing I'll warn you about is that there's a lot of DMEs that get raked over the coals for being less than helpful to their patients/clients. On the other hand, we welcome those who have an open mind and are willing to exchange information. There ARE a number of good, helpful RTs who frequent this forum and we appreciate their presence and input.
As for myself, I bypassed the local DMEs and purchased everything online from CPAP.COM......the originator of this forum......so, I personally don't have an ax to grind with my local DMEs.

Again, welcome to the forum and please feel free to ask questions and participate.

Best wishes,

Den

I am so new at this, could someone "Please" tell me how to respond to a post in the correct way? It seems that each time i reply, it looks different and not correct.... makes me feel..............dumb.

Thank you, I am so new to all this, I am still learning how to post a reply to posts here. Sorry if it does not come thru as it should.
