Why didn't my alarm go off?

Post by Country4ever » Sun Nov 11, 2007 5:38 pm

Hi all,
I turned my alarm on a few days ago. I can make it go off intentionally by not having my nasal pillow on right. But last night, I woke up breathing out of my mouth, tongue cemented down worse than ever......but the alarm didn't go off. What gives?
(Maybe the machine was having too much fun watching me make a fool of myself??)

Did you turn smartstart on? If so, your machine may be thinking that when you get really big leaks, you have stopped treatment. One of the ways to stop treatment is to have smartstart enabled. I haven't tried it - just reading in the manual.

I saw the option to turn on an alarm when the machine leaks. I tried it, but I thought it would be way to loud if it went off. So I turned it off.

I saw the Smartstart. I wonder what that is.

More reading on the smartstrart/leak thing.

SmartStart = machine will start automatically when you breathe into your mask and stop automatically when you take the mask off. This means you don't have to press the on/off key to begin or end treatment.

Above is from the user manual.

Also, apparently when you turn on the leak alarm, it automatically disables smartstart. It also appears that the feature only works with certain masks - not the full face masks because of the anti-asphyxia valve (from the troubleshooting section).

I have a machine and software the shows the night progress minute by minutes. It also shows the leak levels relative to the level above which the machine can't function.

Mouth leaks are never high enough to cross the "big leak" (or in your case "alarm" level), because much of the air is still pouring into you.

Your are still breathing there on the other side of the machine, so
1. The machine senses you breathing
2. The leak is not that high.

In addition to the dry mouth - which is not good for your health, the problem with mouth leaks it that apneas are not discovered. If an obstruction is encountered, the pressured air takes the path of least resistance - out of your mouth, instead of building up to open the obstruction.

You can't trust the machine to warn you when mouth leak - and you absolutely have to get a handle on that mouth leak.
