Autoset Spirit vs Resmed Auto

Post by bigcat » Mon Apr 25, 2005 1:28 pm

I have had the opportunity to use both machines. I can't really tell a difference in how I feel. I am unable to read the data from the resmed but with the spirit my ahi is 1.8 to 3.2.

Has anyone had the opportunity and noticed a real difference? I have read some autos work better for certain people, but they both seem to work well for me.

cpap.com has a APAP Compare Chart. It may not give the experience data, but it'll give hard facts.

They both use the same A10 algorithm so there should be no difference in operation. The new S-8 also uses this .
The Autoset T is the father of the Spirit and Grandfather of the S-8 . They are all made by resmed. They all use the A-10 algorithm

bigcat, when you said "Resmed Auto", did you mean the Remstar Auto (by Respironics)?

If so, I've used both - the ResMed Spirit and the Respironics Remstar Auto (and the 420E auto). All three did fine for me. Others can tell you more about the pros/cons of how the algorithms differ - I'm not techie enough to do that.

Of the two autos I think you're talking about...if I were never going to get software for either machine, I'd prefer the ResMed Spirit, since as you said, you can see the AHI on the display if you wish.

But if I were going to get the software (and I definitely would...I did..for both. ) I much prefer the Encore Pro software for the Respironics auto over the Spirit's Autoscan software. Actually, the Silverlining software for the 420E is my favorite software.

All things considered, since all three machines were able to treat me fine, and since I use no more than moderate pressure, I opted for the Respironics REMstar Auto with C-Flex because of the nice pressure drop relief on exhalation that c-flex gives.

There are always exceptions, but I think most people will do equally well on any of the major brands of autopap. (I'm not a doctor...just my opinion.)

Yes, nice catch rested gal. The remstar auto. Unfortunately, it does not have cflex.

My DME gave it to me for a one month study. They told me to just mail the card to them after a month. I mailed it two weeks ago, have not heard back and still have the auto. I have another card, but I can't see spending the money for the encore pro software when they may come and get the unit at anytime. Believe me, it is driving me CRAZY that I can't download the data from my remstar auto!!! It is really difficult if not impossible to make changes based on the data when you have to wait 2 months to see what is going on. Sorry for that rant, a little off topic

Very good points rested gal. Since they both have the same A10 algorithm the software really makes the difference.

I think chrisp was saying that all the RESMED units use the same A10 algorithm. I assume the Resironics is different. ?

Comparison

I have trialed the Respironics RemStar Auto, the ResMed Spirit and the Puritan-Bennett 420E.

I felt well rested (well treated) by the ResMed Spirit and the PB 420E; both left me feeling good upon waking and lots of energy during the day with no need for a nap. When I compared the data produced by the machines, they both seemed to deliver the same average pressure with periodic spikes, likely when I was in REM.

The Respironics RemStar Auto delivered a consistently lower pressure, with periodic spikes. I did not feel as well rested upon waking nor was I comfortably awake during the day.

All this means is that there is room for each/any of us to have a very individualized response to the algorithm in any of the auto machines. If possible, trial all of the machines for a week or more each.

Good luck!
