How long did it take?

Post by admiralross » Mon Oct 29, 2007 8:00 pm

Hello All!

How long did it take you to get your cpap and begin treatment? What I'm meaning your first initial appointment to finally getting your cpap. Why I'm asking? Well, Oct 3rd was my initial appointment. The following week I got my sleep study done. And the following week I met the guy from the DME. Since I've modified my script it seem like forever. I'd like to get underway. I've asked for my study and script. It's taking them forever to mail me my copy. When I asked last week about it. I was told that they still haven't dictated it yet. I was like WHAT????? Either the Dr. is really busy or really lazy. I know he must have someone do the dictation work.

How long?

Your experience is not unusual. Mine took about 2 weeks, but I persuaded the DME to let me use a "temporary" CPAP machine after my APAP was ordered. That took another week.

No one seemed to think it was urgent to get treatment started, except for me...

About 3 weeks for them to read the study and dictate it.

It took a little over 2 weeks. When I first called the DME, which was 1 week after the doctor's office had faxed them the prescription, they said they hadn't received anything from the doctor. Doctor's office faxed information a second time, DME still couldn't locate information. After a some searching, they found it, then made appointment for me to come in to see the RT and show me how to use CPAP. The doctor's office told me that particular company was known for being slow. But because of insurance, it was more cost effective for me to use that company..they are a large nation wide company.
Good luck.

Two night sleep study the first on 11/21/06 the second one on 11/28/06 got my machine not long after the last study, two or three day's later as i recall. Asked for a copy of both studies and no problem gave me copies right away after i asked for them. Some time in early December 2006, I found cpaptalk shortly after getting my machine and if i knew now what i didn't know then i would have demanded an auto or bi-pap machine. Stuck with this Remstarpro M series but making it work for now with the help of software.

Getting Started...

Post by SleeplessInOhio » Tue Oct 30, 2007 1:12 am

Most sleep docs are swamped! The usual turn around is 2-3 weeks. They will do a "rush" job for someone who drives for example, who is medically off work until treated for their sleep disorder. Hang in there!

My first sleep study was 2/12 or 3/12, I can't remember which. I got my equipment on 4/28. It seemed like it took forever.

I had my first sleep study in April, got the machine the end of July(that's Apria for you!). I know it's hard to wait, but be patient, it will be worth the wait in the end!

You got it made. My first study was July 27, I finally got the CPAP machine on October 12th!

My dr should be renamed Dr. Dolittle!

how long

I was the lucky one.

Called for appointment on a Tuesday, had the study on Sunday, and had the machine and mask on Friday. I have a local DME and a very nice doctor.

I had a follow-up study done about a year later on a Sunday, and had the results on Wednesday and a talk with the doctor. Copy of the study in hand that day and the summary in the mail a week later.

Not everyone is that lucky.

Best luck of all is finding cpaptalk.

Last minute instructions.

Post by admiralross » Tue Oct 30, 2007 11:09 am

Well, I just got off the phone with DME. They do indeed have the updated script. So I have an appointment on the Nov 9th. The guy is on vacation. I talked to his secretary. I wanted to make sure the machine is ordered. I told her that I want the Resmed Auto M seris. *NOT* the plus. w/ the a-flex. If the guy gets to see it before then. He can order it and bring it with him to my sleep centers office. I didn't want to sit down with him again and leave empty handed. That would've been a waste of our time.

How Long?

Post by papoose » Tue Oct 30, 2007 11:40 am

For me the process was outrageously protracted and unacceptably long:

- Five years of complaining
- Six months wait for two sleep studies
- Four months wait for two reports
- One month for doc to write prescription
- One week for insurance to approve
- One month for DME to respond

Altogether too long for treating severe apnea. I wasn't aware how unusual my situation was until I joined this forum and learned that others were diagnosed and treated within a month or so.

And the knowledge I gained here empowered me to request my sleep study reports, which took several more months and a notarized letter to obtain.

Slight technical correction .. ResMed does not make the M series -- Respironics makes the M series.

Thanks, I knew I wanted the M series.
