The new Remstar Pro cflex that I rented from the DME did NOT have any odors and as I stated I have never owned a car that had any odor problems.

One of the first things I did was call Respironics. They said to return it. However, since it was not a noisy machine as some people had, I wanted to try to solve the problem. I had to keep cutting the machine back on because it kept cutting off - over and over again. Very frustrating! I also had a spouse who was very ill at the time.

I do not know what the thread is but if you ask Chrisp, perhaps he can help you.

There have not been that many threads dealing with the odor problem. Actually I was the one who was able to help someone else solve his/her problem. Newbies especially should NOT have to deal with this problem. There are many who have asthma and allergies. Odors could cause some to give up on their treatment.

Since you and I are individuals, we do not begin to have the clout that Johnny has. Respironics should get the odor out before they send it to us. If the machines need running to do this, they should do it and they should also change the filters again before sending them out. Johnny should at the least do a spot check. Then he will know whether he needs to let Respironics know of the odor problem.

I DO NOT AGREE WITH YOU AT ALL!

As to the Remstar Pro that you rented not having the smell, I would suspect that it wasn't new.

Also, as to changing the filters, the unit comes NEW with no filters installed, so again if yours came with filters installed, I would suspect it wasn't new.

As to CPAP.COM doing spot checks, how would you propose that be done? Attach a mask and hose to each unit? How should they go about disinfecting the machines after? Should they now give a discount because the machine is used?

It is not realistic to have them do that. Yes you can complain and yes Respironics might pay more attention to Johnny than an individual patient. But more than likely they will look at the number of units sold versus the number of complaints and come up with the suggestion of running it for a while to get the smell out. (as some folks don't even seem to notice it)

I do have asthma and I did notice it, but it was more of a curiousity than an irritant. If you are that sensitive to chemical smells that you need to be proactive in how you approach life. Info on chemical hypersensitivity

I am still looking for the thread in which Chrisp and Lduyer offered no assistance, when did you post it?

The unit that was rented was new. I saw the DME put in the filters and take it out of a new box.

The chemical sensitivity has nothing to do with how I approach life. It may be partly hereditary as both my mother and sister have the same problem and exposure to insensitive jerks who smoke. I think smokers have a lot of gall to think it's ok to blow smoke in other people's faces. The only advantage is being able to smell gas leaks. I have moved into 2 houses that had gas leaks as well as detected gas leaks in other people's homes.

The least that Johnny could do is to include an instruction sheet instructing people on how to get rid of the problem which also includes changing/washing the applicable filters after running the unit and to mention that the unit cuts off frequently as well as including an extra temporary filter. He is after all making a profit. I notice you posted a question about odors and even if odors do not bother you, it is not wise to breathe in chemical odors expecially if you have asthma. Don't forget that there are many other people to consider who do not have a computer or are not aware of these forums. Johnny knows the best person to contact at Respironics while most of us would not have that information. Johnny, why don't you tell us who to contact? When people buy a new machine, they should not have to put up with obnoxious odors. If someone takes a few breaths from a machine that is certainly not going to contamimate it.

The info you are so anxious to see was posted shortly after Feb 21, 2005.

Obviously you have sensitivities to some smells and not others. I have had a number of new cars and all had the "New Car Smell". I guess all the car manufacturer's should come up with a way to meet your requirements. Maybe add something about driving with the windows down?

As you said yourself there are only a few threads on the smell. With the Remstar Auto with Cflex being one of the favorite machines here, that alone should tell you that most people don't have a problem with it. Additionally I did a search on Talk About Sleep and came up with a single thread.

With this "problem" only affecting a very small percentage of users, I don't see Respironics going to heroic measures to satisfy a few select users.

New things made of plastic tend to have a plastic smell, it is an unfortunate fact of life. And again, if you feel that strongly about it then contact Respironics.

However, as I suggested before you might have a sensitivities to chemicals that you need to research.

BTW, I did finally find a post by Yoga, that was in the middle of a thread about setting a Remstar Auto. Still don't see Lduyer jumping in tho. If the problem was that big of a concern, why didn't you start a new thread? Additionally chrisp gave you the answer of leave it running (albeit in a humorous way).

Mikesus,

Thanks for clarifying this for me.

I was scratching my head over that one, for I couldn't remember EVER commenting on that issue, let alone reading the topic.

I post lots of stuff and I might not read them all. Still, I would have remembered that one, new car smell and all.

I do "egg" people on sometimes, but this time, ..... not guilty.

Thanks for pointing it out.

Linda,
who only likes to "egg" on Liam and SWS, because they can be so funny.
