Resmed Mirage Swift Mask

Post by joecubjr » Wed Oct 17, 2007 2:53 pm

Hello,

I have been using my CPAP for only three weeks now and was at first very excited to get a good nights sleep. However, it seems that the Mirage Swift Mask leaks from the side where the tube connects and on the other side where the stopper is. I have to push them both in with my hands while I try and sleep or I have to try and ignore the hissing of the leaking air. It is very annoying and I find I am having a harder time going to sleep. I suffer from anxiety disorder and this is just causing me more stress at night. If anyone else has had this problem and knows how to fix it I would be most appreciative to your help.

Thanks!

You could always use plumbers teflon tape around stopper and around the hose connect. It should make it a little bit more snug.

Thank you for replying so fast papdaddy. I saw that answer somewhere else too. I am going to try that tonight. But it seems like because I have such a big head that the straps are pulling out the side connectors that hold the stopper and tube in place. I am thinking that even with the tape that it will still pull out. I am constantly having to push them both back in.

I've been using the Swifts for about 6 months.
I've had those leaks.
Changing the parts can help (barrel, stopper, pillows), as can Teflon tape.
Try contacting the company - they might just sent you extra bits as a courtesy.

Thank you momadams and dgrendahl. I am going to try the teflon tape tonight. I also did take it apart for cleaning but I thought I put it back together right according to the manual. I am going to relook at it tonight. Thank you dgendahl for posting becuase that gets me really curious now. I might have more questions because I am not sure I understand what you mean about the blue part. But I will post again tomorrow and let you guys know how it turns out. Hopefully, you have solved my delima!

Some thoughts on this matter...

Post by Dgrendahl » Wed Oct 17, 2007 5:12 pm

Here is a link to the mask. Please notice that surrounding the "pillow sleeve" is the blue ring from the headgear. The headgear has in the round holes a part called the "seal ring." The blue part goes around that "seal ring." The stiching on the headgear must be facing outwards. When this is done, the blue ring OF the headgear will be on the "seal ring" closest to the pillow sleeve. Take a look here:

http://www.resmed.com/en-uk/products/ma ... u=products

There are three "pdf's" that you can look at that might help.

Check this link out:

Hope this helps. See the blue rings on it?

Good morning! So last night I couldn't find my teflon tape so I need to pick some up today. But I looked at the mask and looked at all the material that came with the mask (which is exactly the links you sent over Dgrendahl). My mask is put together correctly. So when I went to bed I tried to figure out what the problem is again. I loosend the strap that goes behind my head and that seemed to help because the two blue peices that are attached to the pillow are being pulled away from the pillow. But the problem with loosening the strap that in the middle of the night it was coming off my face. I really think this maybe a case of "Big Head Syndrome". LOL My head maybe too big for this mask because it keeps the blue peices that are attached to the pillow pulled away. If this makes sense. So I have to keep pushing them in. I am not even sure the teflon tape is going to work. But Ill give it a try. If not then I will talk to ResMed about the nasal aire II.
Thanks!

Contact the company about your problem.
They may be able to recomment a "fix".
At the very least, they need to know that there's a need out there that they're not meeting yet.

Joe, in addition to the great suggestions here may I add another one? One of the problems with the Swift is the back strap riding up causing the mask to shift around and leak. Our forum memeber, Steve, posted a fix for this a while back. Cut 2 pieces of self stick velcro, using the "hook" side, sticking them to inside of the back straps. It was also suggested to staple them for added security. Once you put on the mask and adjust the back straps to your comfort the velcro gently grips your hair preventing it from sliding around. (If you have no hair I don't think this fix will help )

Don't even try, like I did, thinking that doing the same to the top will also give a little more stability. All it did was remove a bunch of my hair when I tried to take off the mask.

This fix has worked great for a lot of us Swift users. I've tried a bunch of masks and always come back to the Swift. (Actually the Swift II). I like to read every night and am a side sleeper turning a lot during the night and the Swift always stays in place. Are you using the original Swift or the Swift II? The original was quite noisy but the "improved" is much more quieter, I can even hear my pond waterfall outside my bedroom window which I didn't hear with the original.

Good luck and stick with it, finding the best mask for you is a lot of trial and error.

I have the mirage swift II. I love this mask because it is so quite. That is if I hold my hand to keep the sides pushed in. It is so quiet it is like have a humidifer on or a fan. It is comfortable, wasn't at first but I got used to it. I love it I just don't understand why it leaks so much from the sides. I will try the velcro tip thing too. Maybe if I loosen it like I did last night and put the velcro in the back it might work. Because it won't need to be pulled so tight as to pull the blue holders off of the pillow.
I do have hair and I move around a lot during my sleep so this mask is somewhat perfect except for the side leakage. Hopefully ResMed calls me back today.

Just wanted to give you an update. I called ResMed again and they are sending me a new mask. Same one: Mirage Swift II. Hopefully this fixes it. I will update you all after I use it for a bit.

I just got the swift II yesterday. Used it for the first time last night. Same problem. Hissing and leaking coming from the sides. I dont have a large head, and my straps were in place just fine. I put my hair in a bun and the back strap was under it....couldnt ride up. When I could get those side leaks to stop it was even quieter than my UMFF. I am hoping I can get those hissing leaks to stop.

Mask leaks...

Post by Dgrendahl » Fri Oct 19, 2007 6:40 pm

I have a narrow, thin face and have no problem with leaks. I love this mask and will be purchasing a backup. Is it possible that those who are having trouble have wider faces, thereby the headstrap ends up pulling the sleeve away from the pillow? I'm thinking that might be the case. How do you (others) see this differently
