mask trouble

Post by chriml » Tue Oct 09, 2007 6:34 am

I am hoping someone could give me advice who has encontered this problem with thier masks. I have Profile lite gel mask, confort classic mask and flexfit HC431 FFM. For two weeks now I am waking up several times with the mask blowing all over the place. I also find it out of place on my forehead. I have tried adjusting it but still the same thing with all masks all night long. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sounds like you have some wild nights!!!

You might try checking the Mask Fitting tips under the Red Ball w/the Question Mark at the top of the forum page PLUS don your mask, turn your CPAP on during the evening whilst reading the paper, watching TV, doing a crossword or jigsaw puzzle. In other words wear your mask w/your CPAP on whilst your mind is occupied w/something other than the mask on your face and the pressure from the CPAP. That gets you used to that mask so you are more comfortable w/it when trying to sleep. Do keep in mind that our facial tissue responds to the force of gravity so mask fit will be somewhat different between sitting up reading, watching TV, etc. than when laying in bed on your back or sides so there may be some minor adjustments that need to be made between sitting up and actually in bed sleeping.

Did your sleep or titration study indicate any restless legs or periodic leg movements? Did it mention sleep position changes and how many of those you went thru in a night? Not that we move around as much during the studies w/all that "stuff" attached!! Do you have a sleep partner? Has he/she commented that you toss and turn a lot during your sleep?

It sounds like you may well be one who would definitely benefit from hanging your mask hose ABOVE your head. There are tips here in the forum for various ways to hand your hose and there are some masks that provide for attaching the hose to the top of your head. The Breeze and the ComfortLite 2 nasal pillows masks provide for over the head routing of the hose. The ComfortLite 2 comes w/the option of nasal pillows and simple nasal cushion or nasal pillows and nasal seals. If you prefer the nasal cushion type mask the CL2 might be the better choice to try. The Simplicity simple nasal cushion also have provision for routing the hose over your head if you prefer. Routing the hose above your head would most likely go a very long way to preventing mask shifting off your face and/or out of position.

Darn gravity... Darn gravity to heck!

Just keep trying, you'll get there.

Be sure to clean the mask well. I also use a 1 part vinegar 3 parts water soak for my masks. It seems to get rid of any soap or oily residue on the mask, and helps me get a better seal.
