Question regarding sleep study results

Post by Idget » Mon Oct 08, 2007 7:03 pm

I had a sleep study Saturday night. I talked to the doctor today and while I don't have the specific results of the study I was told I had minor sleep apnea. This was news to me. I had a study done three years ago. In that test I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea, but I walked out of the titration study due to problems with wearing a mask (claustraphobia). I finally went for another test as the sleep apnea appeared to be getting worse. I have not lost or gained any weight over the last three years and feel that the apnea has worsened yet the results show improvement. The doctor ordered a titration test since he believes I should go on CPAP.

Question: can the results vary from day to day? If I would take several tests (not that I would want to!!!), could the test vary that much from severe to mild?

Idget,
IMO, probably your apnea has not varied that much. I'm a registered sleep tech, and I can tell you that some labs' standards are pretty minimal. Is it possible that your apnea could vary? Slightly. Much more likely is that human error skewed the results from the 1st or 2nd test.

Thanks for reply. As I stated I haven't seen the results of the second study yet only talked on the phone to get overall result. While I wish the second result was more accurate, the reason I went in for the second set of tests was that I felt the condition was getting worse. So that is reason for confustion on results. Just last night I woke up out of breath ridden with anxiety and feeling of claustraphopia. Thought this was some mental problem I was dealing with over last few years, but talking to several people with sleep apnea and the doctor this is a normal reaction to having sleep apnea.

Idget....

I'll bet that if you check your BP when you wake up in the middle of the night, you'll be shocked by what you see.

I was waking up a couple of times every night with systolic that spiked to over 200.....NOT good. Also, I couldn't get through the night without having to get up to pee. I realized that I was on my way to a stroke or heart attack in short order!

I had a sleep test about 9-years ago....done by a "cheat" who shouldn't have a DR license. He said I didn't have a problem. The test I had one year ago indicated that I had an AHI below 5.0....meaning that I didn't qualify for any kind of insurance reimbursement.

After quickly researching my problem, I told my doctor what I wanted my script to say. After consulting CPAP.com to learn how to word it, I wrote my own script and told my doctor that I wanted a prescription worded just that way. I then purchased my own machine....WITH software.....and began experimenting with masks.

In short, I took charge of my own treatment....because I found that no one in this area met my standards for competence (I live in a last-place-town-in-a-last-place-state...Louisiana).

Reading this forum EVERY day has given me a better education about my disorder than I could get anywhere else. After I was out the door, my latest DR never followed up......I've not heard from him again.

My AHI averages below 1.0 on nearly every night. Last night it was 0.2......and the night before that it was 0.0. I don't have a BP problem anymore.....and I don't ever get up to pee in the middle of the night. It's been one year since I took charge....hung gauges on myself.....tweaked the settings on my "M" Series.....and saved my own life.

You can do it too.

Gerald
