Post by vlm448 » Sat Oct 06, 2007 1:45 pm

1. Is anyone taking provigil for hypopneas and how is it working?

2. Can anyone recommend a book that explains sleep apnea, how to interpret sleep study, etc. in the SIMPLEST LAYPERSON'S LANGUAGE??

Thank you!

I have learned more about apaps, bipaps, cpaps, sleep apnea, and other sleep disorders by reading this forum. The information is usually up to date and don't have to worry if the info is outdated or slanted by the author's personal bias. Although members of the forum are expressing THEIR own experiences and knowledge the information is NOT one persons opinion or bias, but a multitude.

This is important to me as I want to see the big picture. For instance I can't imagine a pillow system mask working or being comfortable -- yet, many people on the forum swear by them -- that gives me the option of weighing the information in relation to my own personal needs. At some point in the future I am willing to try one of the systems out -- but that is because the forum has opened my mind up about them.

Sleep Apnea--the Phantom of the Night
by T. Scott Johnson MD, William Broughton, MD, and Jerry Halberstadt
is a great book. You might try your library for a copy.

Nothing's as good as this forum. But if I were recommending a book to someone who's not able to do the forum, this one would be it!!!

I took Provigil to combat daytime sleepiness. I could only tolerate 1/2 a pill, or I got so "methed up" I was actually shaking, and one night went into a cleaning frenzy until 10 pm.

After that, I took 1/2 a pill only. It had no side effects, and when I ran out, I quit cold turkey with no withdrawal symptoms. I only took it for 3 months, however.

I recommend it. I've been told it's just an antihistimine, thus not habit forming.

Ask the doc for samples. I got enough samples to get me through the first few months of therapy, until I could manage without it. Never had to buy it.

Good luck!
Barbara
