Melatonin - Experiences?
Melatonin - Experiences?
I've been on CPAP for a couple of months now... feeling better, but still having trouble sleeping very long. 6.5 hours was my max, and lately it's been more like 4 or 5 hours. I still get a little sleepy in the afternoons.
So last night I tried 1 mg of Melatonin.
I slept for 9 hours.
I woke up feeling like superman. I went for a 3 mile walk and still feel great.
Anybody else experience this?

Use it every night, been doing so since 1989, so far no 3rd arm growing out of my forehead.
I take a higher 3mg dose (not saying you should). About the only side effect I've seen reported someone is it was thought to leave them drowsy in the afternoon the next day. If that happens I would try cutting back on the dose by cutting the pill in half if need be.
if it appears to have no effect on you, try a higher dose. I wouldn't take any more than 6mg. The tiny doses are to help with insomnia, the higher doses to keep you asleep.
If 1mg works for you, that is what you should take. Take the minimal amount needed to do the job.

someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...
Holy cow. So I took my walk this morning... then took the wife out to go shopping since she's been couped up after her surgery for a couple of weeks.
Got home, felt like some more exercise (huh?)... so I hopped on my bike and rode 5 miles.
Is this what 9 hours of sleep feels like?
I know my legs are going to revolt tomorrow though.

1mg
I've been taking Melatonin for about 5 years and I researched a lot of info on it.
As Snoredog stated, stick with the 1mg. if it works for you. For most 3mg is about 10 times too much. Melatonin is different in which a larger dose isn't always beneficial for the best results. I also read that once you have been taking it for a couple weeks it will lose some of its benefits. Some of the medical journals state that if you take it regularly you should skip a dose about every 4 or 5 days to keep getting the maximum effect.
I usually skip Sunday nights because I have meetings at 8am on Monday and I can't be groggy (even with coffee, the melatonin makes me "slow" and "relaxed" for the 1st couple of hours.) It seems to affect everyone a little differently.

Melatonin experience
When I was having trouble with laying down and going to sleep, I took Melatonin for a few weeks till my brain got out of the staying awake rut. Just needed a low dose to accomplish that. Some time later I tried taking it to maintain sleep, but had a hard time tolerating an increased dose as I then had restless fitful sleep with wild dreams. I think that the combination of the higher dose of melatonin with the Mirapex I take were not a good combination.
At any rate, when I would wake up at night and take a second low dose of melatonin, it would make me sleepy again within minutes. It was the melatonin that helped me regain the lifetime ability to fall asleep quickly.

Nightmares for me.
Only rarely, and very low dosage.

Sounds like my results from taking Benadryl (actually the generic version) at night.
I tried Melatonin way back in the early 90's, when it was first trendy. Made me so sleepy at work I couldn't function. My doctor said I clearly react oddly to things, and probably shouldn't keep taking it.
My current doctor has a word for it - some sort of hyper reactivity. She is seeing more and more patients like me.
Anyway, if it works for you, GREAT! I might try a tiny bit again and see what happens. I'm having good results with the Benadryl, but the morning grogginess can be tough some days.
Cheers,
Babs

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula.

The first 2 nights, I took 1mg... and it worked great... slept all night.
Last night I only took 0.5mg ( I knew I had to get up and go to work this morning.) Definitely a difference. I only slept about 6 hours.
I think I'll only use it on the weekends anyway. I've always envied people who could sleep in on Saturdays. Perhaps now I can join them.

I took 1 mg sublingual last night. Got sleepy pretty fast, and ended up going to sleep sooner than usual, which is a plus! Still woke up several times in the night, but discovered this AM I didn't take any ibuprofen for the arm pain, so no wonder!
I'm not any more groggy than I usually am this AM.
Cheers,
B.
