Three Horrible Nights

Post by dieselgal » Thu Oct 04, 2007 1:56 pm

I am not sure what is going on but for the last 3 nights I have gone to bed at the normal time 10:30-11:00 and gone to sleep using my CPAP. Around 1 :00 Oclock a.m. I am waking up wide awake in sort of panic attack mode. Not totally flipped out but very tense, then I can't go back to sleep for hours! I even took a muscle relaxer last night before bed and the same thing happened. It is driving me crazy and I am soooooooo tired.
I checked out my readouts on ResScan and it doesn't seem like I am having a problem with apnea's.
I also have been having an odd pain up the left side of my neck and it almost feels like my collar bone hurts too. Oddly enough this pain comes and goes.
Any ideas? I have a Dr. Appt in the morning so hopefully it will be nothing major.

Well, if you're getting jolted out of some deep sleep stage (3 or 4) or REM, that MIGHT account for the panic feeling. WHAT is causing that, if it's not an apnea, and what to do about it may be the bigger questions. Any other sleep disorders? RLS or PLMD?

A rather wild idea, but are you reading in bed before going to sleep? I've found that if I read in bed for more than about 10 minutes, I wake up with a sore neck/shoulder the next day. Sounds crazy, but I've tried it time and again and the only solution for me is to do my reading before bed.

No TX I don't read in bed. I thought about the way I might be sleeping but since I turn over so frequently I don't think it would be that either??? The thing is I will probably be wasting a Dr. visit because I doubt they will figure it out either. I just hope it quits bothering me.

Search me... Sounds hideous. Definitely ask the doc.

My gut feeling is to swap out your pillow. I use those tempurpedic knock off foam pillows, and find they wear down on me every now and then. I just swap one for the other, and it seems to help. I just keep rotating them. They don't get permanently squished, they just need a little vacation now and then. At least, that's my experience.

Try washing everything on your bed, too. Why? I don't know. Just figured it might be nice to crawl into a nice clean bed, fresh pillow... Might give you a new sense of peace and relaxation.

Now, quit it with the cute puppies! You're killing me!!!!

Huggers,
Barbara

developing here

You have some major nerves on that part of the neck, but just in case have the doctor listen to your carotids.
someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

I would insist on an EKG just to make sure your heart is ok...

Heart symptoms in women can be very subtle, and being that the pain is on the left side--I would definitely insist that my doctor do an EKG.

Is it so that heart problems in women can be very subtle?

I've been quite distracted by feeling my heartbeat, which I just realised are palpitations. Usually after a filter coffee or a cup of tea, or a glass of wine which I suspect is normal because of the caffeine/alcohol, but sometimes when I go to bed it keeps me awake awhile.

Don't they do an ECG doing the sleep study? I assumed this would show up any abnormalities.

I'm an RN too, but not well up on cardiac. With my own health I hover between hypochondria and denial - like so many nurses

Thanks everyone for all the advice. I don't think its my machine but anything is possible. I just had a stress test 3 weeks ago and he said my heart looked good, but I keep thinking about the carotids and thats what makes me wnat to see the Dr. I am suppose to see him this morning so hopefully I will get some answers. Last night I slept pretty good but I cheated and took 1/2 ambien.
