Some progress, getting there - nasal pillows advice req'd

Post by grandmma » Thu Sep 27, 2007 3:30 pm

Hi all, since I last wrote some progress has been made. To recap, I had very little info provided, no mask fitting or trials, and was going nutty with the red marks and other mask problems. I'm a side sleeper. I've read a lot of threads, and have researched a lot as well. I've since gone back to my contact and, shall we say nicely, "organised" for the original mask to be credited against my eventual purchase, and am meanwhile going back over and over until I find one I like. The only choices, at least there, seem to be ResMed. I tried a full face, since I seem to be very determined in dropping my lower jaw when I relax even slightly, let alone sleep. I find that I'm getting better at nose breathing, but the full face allowed me to not worry either way, and I had no dry mouth. Unfortunately the fitting (visual as usual) was not wonderful with the mask, and where my first nose mask left a nasty pressure point under my nose between my nostrils, this one left a very nasty one on the bridge of my nose, despite taping it one night. I'm a real sight now. Thank heavens for trowels and concealer!

I've since therefore moved to a nasal pillows, and have no trouble breathing with that. The one provided (so far!) is a Mirage Liberty. My problem is the mouth area seems too small by far, and it feels like it actually pressures my lower jaw to drop open. Is the mask too small, need adjustment, or will I get used to this? Even with the humidifier on 2 out of 5, I woke several times with a very dry mouth and lips. I did get find it very difficult to drop off compared to the other masks, but perhaps this was due to it being unfamiliar.

Anyone with any experience here, opinion would be appreciated. Thanks guys & gals for the great site, info is great.

I have the swift nasal pillows, which I really like. My remedy for mouth breathing? Polident strips. No kidding. Half a strip (cut lengthwise), moistened and placed between the lips. No doesn't force the jaw closed but does keep the lips from leaking air. The dry mouth can be from air leaking through the mouth which also prevents the cpap therapy from working effectively. I'm also a side sleeper, and occasionally wake up with slightly sore front teeth, probably from the pressure of the mask.
