I've never had rainout, but I wouldn't sleep without my hose cover. That nice warm flannel feels much nicer against my face (and other body parts) than hard, ribbed plastic.

You can also use shelf liner to keep the machine from moving on a table or night stand (the kind that looks like a waffle with the holes all the way through). It is made of some kind of rubber or plastic and grips very well. I also use it underneath rugs on wood floors and under child seats in the car to provide a bit of extra grip on cloth/leather seats. I got a ridculously long roll of it at costco for a reasonable price.
