Frankly, I am jealous just a bit! I never know whether the problem is caused by too much or too little humidity. I just have to experiment.

If I wake up unable to breathe AFTER having changed the setting to a higher one, then I have a good indication that it wasn't because I needed more humidity.

Then I turn it down a full notch (assuming that I had increased it a half-notch when I first noticed the stuffiness) to see if that makes any difference.

I haven't noted a real change in the pressure vis a vis humidity settings. Mine has changed about a month ago, and it was a relatively significant change, IMHO. (It was a 9 and was raised to a 13.)

I have noted that some masks seem to require more or less humidity. Maybe this is because the mask has a differing exhaust rate, or the routing of the air inside the mask combined with the size causes a difference? For example, the exhaust for the Breeze consists of one hole through a silicone plug. The Hybrid and Mirage Liberty, however, have a number of holes approximately the same size for exhaust.

I have noted that with both full face masks I have tried, I need to lube my lips. I have found that my left over lanolin makes an excellent and long lasting lip moisturizer.

I do not know, and my physics knowledge is all rather intuitive. ImageThus, if anyone else can explain this phenomenon, I would appreciate it!

Thanks,

Karen

anyway he said that he doesnt think i am getting the correct pressure and he says to up my humdity,
he called my doctor and ask for a machine the reports my air flow for a week and it will see where and what settings i need
so i guess it takes time for it all to work out, for the most part it is great, i love the machine but i have to figure out what I am doing

this might be a silly question but if i have a stuffy nose how do i know when i am getting enough humidity, i tried the highest setting last night and felt like the hairs were burning in my nose,
I live in a humid environment and even a humidifier setting of 1 creates too much moisture in my mask. I use a cover on the hose to help prevent rain out which is water in the hose. Settings should vary machine to machine. So when I say I set mine to 1, if you don't live in the same environment or have a Respironics A-Flex, then it is unlikely you would have near results for the same settings.

When you say stuffy, do you mean dry and stuffy, or mucous-like and stuffy? When I need more humidity, my nose is dry and stuffy - a slight burning sensation. When I have too much humidity, my mask spits water on me.

Try various settings on your humidifier to see where you're most comfortable. Like you said, it does take time to get everything where we feel best.

Anyway, given this I think that although pressure can affect the delivery of humidity, so can inherent humidity, temperature (cold room/warm hose = rainout), and probably more. : )
