Looking for comments on ResMed VPAP Malibu

Post by dorilda » Tue Sep 11, 2007 7:19 pm

I have been reading these topics for a few weeks now so a little more familiar then I was. I register in a couple of days ago but was having problem posting new topic. I met with DME today and they are pushing the ResMed VPAP Malibu and I was leaning to the Responironics Auto Bipap with BiFlex and I need heated humdifier. Precription is for BIPAP machine with pressure 20/15. So I am considered severe. Looking at Swift II nasal pillow?? I didn't take a machine and equipment home today. The person was very pushy toward their machine. I had husband and son with me (son has had sleep apnea for 5 years). After leaving their office I made appt with the doctor to discuss my second sleep test and reason for selecting BIPAP machine but not auto. I would appreciate any comments on these machines. Thank you, dorilda

I would like to get my hands on one too would have it in bits within 10 mins

Am interested to know if it is the same blower as the VPAP III (which whines) or if it uses the new super-dooper twin-impeller, low-inertia high-powered, noiseless blower designed for the amazing Vpap Adapt SV

If the latter, It will be an excellent machine. If the former, then the whine will eliminate me as any future customer

I would consider buying a Vpap Adapt SV or perhaps a Vpap Malibu except I am certain Resmed will come out with an improved model based on all they learned from the two Adapt early market models (the Autoset CS2 & Vpap Adapt SV). I am hoping they can improve the mask matching to the machine the training procedure seems tedious.

It will be good if someone is able to supply some honest feedback re this machine. Dlfo has his hands (nose) on a Bipap AutoSV & his feedback re that will be interesting.

xPAP and Quattro std mask (plus a pad-a-cheek anti-leak strap)

This from Resmed Co. website:
"Hypopneas that are central in origin (related to your central nervous system, not physical obstruction) should NOT be treated with increased pressure."
Accepting that's true then what can ANY machine do, since its ONLY capability is to increase pressure?

I think you're leaning the right way.

You may very well have severe apnea, but high (or low) pressure is not really an indication of the severity or mildness of Obstructive Sleep Apnea. The AHI from your sleep study is the indicator of the severity of your OSA. The amount of pressure it takes to keep the airway open has to do with anatomy. One person can have extremely severe sleep apnea, yet need only 7 or 8 cms of cpap pressure to keep the airway open. Another person can have it mild, yet need a pressure of 18.

Good for you! You're doing your research, which is good. It's a lot harder to get a different machine after you've already accepted whatever the DME gives you and have used it several months. Better to get what you want in the first place, even if it means finding a different DME.

Actually, both the machine the DME was trying to get you to take and the machine you want are bi-level machines (commonly called "bipaps" even though "BiPAP" is Respironics' trademark name for their bi-level machine and "VPAP" is resmed's trademark name for their bi-level.)

The BiPAP Auto with Bi-flex and the VPAP Malibu are both bi-level machines ("bipaps") with the additional feature of auto-titration that can be turned on if desired. I personally like the extra comfort of "bi-flex" in a BiPAP or the BiPAP Auto.

Even if the doctor prescribed "bipap" or "bi-level" and didn't mention "auto" along with the word bipap on the Rx, any DME should be willing to fill the "bipap" prescription with the BiPAP Auto with Bi-flex machine. That machine (and the Malibu) are first and foremost "bi-level" machines.

If you had accepted the Malibu or if you had received the BiPAP Auto....either way, the DME would probably have set the machine for just bipap mode ...simply not turning auto-titration on if that was not mentioned on the Rx.

But you could always turn on auto-titration if you want to, at home. Either on your own, or after consulting with your doctor about whether he/she thinks it's a good idea for you to use "auto-titration" along with the bi-level operation of the machine.

Good luck shopping!

Hope your son is doing well in his cpap treatment. Perhaps he'll have fun giving mom tips about how to use the mask and machine.

Since you clearly found Resmed's web site, I'm surprised that you didn't see this....

Resmed Malibu vpap

Post by Guest » Sat Nov 17, 2007 10:35 pm

Just got one of these on Thursday and it is noisy! Keeps me and my wife awake. So much for a machine that is supposed to help you sleep better...

My old respironics remstar auto is not vpap but it was at least quiet so will be putting it back into action until I can get a quieter vpap.

Update on Malibu

Returned the machine to the local provider (Lincare). The rep told me I was the third person to return a Malibu machine that week.

Avoid if you are a light sleeper.
