Test Results?

Post by mcgheeb » Thu Apr 14, 2005 5:36 pm

Just finished my first night at the sleep center. The center called this morning and is scheduling me for another night due to having 23 sleep apnea's per hour and 57 an hour when dreaming. My oxygen dropped to 80. Can anyone explain what all this means in terms of severity.

Thanks.

Greetings MCG,

Welcome to CPAPTalk.com!

Judging by your events (apnea, hypopnea) you have severe sleep apnea.

An event is when you either stop breathing, or have a 50% reduction in breathing.

Your blood oxygen saturation should be 90% or above. Anything lower than 90% is not good. I too dropped down to 80%.

You have more apnea, and hypopnea during REM (dream sleep). This is common, for REM is the most demanding on your cardio vascular system.

Everytime you have an event, it pulls you out of the sleep stage you are in, and brings you back to either awake, or stage 2 sleep. This is not good for getting a good nights sleep.

The lab is going to bring you back in and use a mask to keep breathing properly. It makes a world of difference to sleep a full night without interuption.

You are going feel much better.

Regards,

Ted

I had my sleep study two days ago. After 3 hours of "sleep", they woke me and put on a CPAP machine for the rest of the night. Prior to being on the machine I stopped breathing 50 times per hour and had my oxygen drop into the 80% range on a regular basis. Once they put me on CPAP, I stopped breathing 2 times per hour (they think the mask was leaking a little after I would roll over). My oxygen stayed above 90% for the entire four hours I slept with the mask. They prescribed a CPAP machine for me that I used last night for the first time. I feel less sleepy today and my wife says I did not snore at all last night.

You've really helped me understand my situation much better. I have not consulted with my doc yet so I had no idea what all this meant. If the mask will help me sleep better and not tire so quickly it will be worth the inconvenience of wearing the mask. Thanks for your input.

I had events 57 times per hour and then 97 times per hour when I was in rem. They didn't have to tell me it was severe. I also suffer from Atrial Fibrulation(irregular hearbeat) which my cardiologist associates entirely to the apnea. You will feel a lot better with it on.

I occasionally have issues with the mask leaking. I just tighten the straps though and it doesn't leak anymore.

Yes, this is considered acute. You've come to the right board, so many of us have been thru this, ongoing, and lots of help here. Keep writing, ok?
