Finally will get a full face mask

Post by LavenderMist » Thu Sep 06, 2007 11:12 am

After going back and forth with doc office the full face mask rx finally went through to the insurance company and passed on to DME.

The DME is coming out today or tomorrow for me to try full face masks. He is recommending Fisher and Paykel 431. He said he also has Soyala, which I've read about, but not Quattro. So, I guess it will be between those two.

I'll post after I get it and use it to sleep. I hope it works out well.

I ended up with the F&P FlexiFit HC431 Full Face Mask. He left me with both the medium and small seals. We tried the medium and had lots of leaks and small seemed better. After he left, I layed down with it a while and it seems like the seal may cut across the top of my nose. May have to put the medium seal back on and fiddle around with it a bit for leaks. Why can't this be simple?

For me, I have to get the 431 so tight on my face to seal, that after 2 days, I had a blister on the bridge of my nose.

I got a Quattro and I don't have to keep it NEARLY as tight. I think the fluffier your fcae is, the more stuff moves around and it's harder to seal.

My face is a little fluffier than I'd like right now.

"Fluffy" face, huh, JQP???

LavenderMist, try sitting your 431 a little below where you eventually want it on your nose, then slide it UP just a skosh to where it should be. That turns the edges of the cushion/cover UNDER so they aren't cutting into your skin. You can also try running your fingertip along the seal line between mask cushion and nose skin as that also helps to turn the cushion/cover UNDER so the edges don't cut your skin plus it helps to set the seal and avoid the air leaks into your eyes. Whatever you do DON'T let the mask slide DOWN your nose as that turns the cushion/cover edges up and "out" and cutting into your skin.

JQP..my face is less fluffier than it used to be, but is still fluffier than I'd like too. <giggle> A blister on the nose. Ouch! Poor guy. I hope I don't wake up that way in the morning.

Slinky, thanks for the tip. I'm going to try that tonight and hopefully will wake up tomorrow morning with a grateful nose. Since the mask fits under the chin, I guess i'll have to work with the top first and then fiddle with getting it under the chin with no leaks. I sure hope this one works. I'd hate to think I'll be stuck with this thing for three months if it doesn't. The DME rep raved about it and said it was the one he personally uses.

Medium on both. I tried the small and it was a little too small. I wish there was something inbetween medium and small.

The Quattro didn't hurt my nose anymore, but as I said in another post, it gave me two flaming zits on my forehead from the rubber pad and the headgear. Doc says I wasn't cleaning stuff well enough.

My wife is a talented seamstress.

She traced out the forehead pad on the Quattro and laid it out on some fleece.

She made my pad a little bigger than the Pad-a-cheek one... the end tabs extend out a little farther to go under the temple staps... so it's like 2 products in one.

Worked great. The only drawback I found is that without the rubber pad touching the forehead, the mask can slide up a little easier. I woke up with air blowing in my eyes because the mask had slid up when I rolled onto my side.

That's ONE thing I liked about the F&P mask better... the fact that it comes down under then chin.
