split, the sexual "testing of the plumbing" that occurs during REM applies for females, too.

Lyric, did you get the jist of what SAG was saying? He obviously has some background knowledge (What are you SAG? RRT? RPSGT? MD? PhD? all of these?). Basically, the anti-depressants can make you not have any REM, or only a little REM.

The narcolepsy test may not be very accurate because of your antidepressents. Have you ever had episodes of cataplexy? A history of cataplexy can get you a DX of narcolepsy withOUT having to take the MSLT.

Great post, Jen.

By the way, weaning off benzo's takes the same track - switching to a longer acting one is part of the process --- http://www.benzo.org.uk/manual/index.htm

One hypothesis was that these erections during sleep may help maintain or even exercise the neuronal pathway involved in an erection. The saying "use it or lose it" was mentioned i.e. if you don't have these ercetions during sleep, you might suffer from erectile dysfunction. This is perhaps why many untreated male OSA patients have ED because they don't reach REM sleep.
This is exactly why REM is so IMPORTANT, worth the price of the machine alone. You should get a visual indicator in the morning if the machine was working, no oximeter is needed

RG can go without REM, I can't

if you think about it, you are in the deepest relaxed state during REM sleep. Viagra supposedly also works by relaxing the blood vessels in that part of the anatomy er johnson.

Antidepressants; I read one report recently that suggested adverse side effects of using these long term screw up or slow down your metabolism so much it is difficult to recover. We have an epidemic of obesity, they seem to hand those pills out like candy now days.

I will chime in here- I work in addictions field

benzos- xanax librium valium ativan etc are very addicting

they work much the same as alcohol on the human brain

detox from benzos is a medical concern- as is detox from alcohol
you can have seizures, hallucinations, all kinds of bad stuff coming off benzos

I dont like them-- but they are used because they do work for anxiety
