AMANDALEE- You're so right about the diabetes thing. Who tells a diabetic to come back in 2 or 3 weeks to get help? Or how about people suffering from depression? I wish there was a way for OSA to be treated right away, but I understand that there is more involved, reading tests and so forth.

GEODOUG- Thanks for the suggestions. Since I read them, I am rethinking my day for tomorrow. I was going to give in and not even try anymore. I was going to just sleep through the enitre day and not even try to stay up during the morning and try for a small nap in the afternoon. But you have encouraged me to get to bed at my regular time and get up at my regular time.

I will do as you suggested with the exercise too. I will take the dog for a long walk, not just the short version that I sometimes take her on. We'll walk throughout my complex, which is a very good distance, especially for a dog as small as she is. I cannot do much right now in the area of exercise, because i have a pinched nerve in my spine, which I've been treated for, but the pain is still pretty bad sometimes, especially when I do too much.

The way this condition is handed, even by the "experts," just really upsets me when I hear about people having to wait forever to get their CPAP machines after the study.
Besides the fact that it makes you feel like crap and messes up your life, untreated OSA can have so many other serious health consequences (obesity, hypertension, risk of diabetes, heart problems, etc). When I went for my titration study, I asked the tech how long it would take to get me a machine once the test was done. She kindly assured me it would take no longer than 6 weeks. At the time, that seemed to me like telling a heart attack patient in the ER to come back in 6 weeks.
So the next day I emailed my doctor, told him how horribly awful I was feeling, that I could barely make it through a work day and was worried about getting fired from my job, felt like my life was falling apart, etc. I got my machine ONE week later (still too long, IMO, but it could be worse).

Polite persistance and anything you can do or say to get them to see you as an actual person rather than just a name in the computer is helpful.

OR you could take the dog, a sleeping bag and air mattress and catch a nap in the doctor's waiting room with a sign saying you are waiting for equipment to help you breath. I am sure my snoring, and I would wear my most ragged jammies, would convince someone to order a machine.

BTW, I walked my little teacup poodle (Lexi) this morning before I went back to bed. So she's a little happier today.

LOL, i have a 'lexi' too, but she's a 90 lb. black lab... we adopted her from a shelter, so she already had the name 'lexus' (the only big, black lexus we'll ever be able to afford ), but we shorten it to lexi...

Well, the sleep doc never called me back yesterday. At 9:00 this morning, I will be on the phone trying to speak to her again. I will be nicely persistent. However, I would love to take Daddysaur's suggestion and camp out in the waiting room with Lexi.

You know, I did that once. Really. I suffer from depression, and a few years back, I was in bad shape. I went to my psychiatrist's office without an appointment. The receptionist said that I couldn't see my doc until the next day. So I went over to one of the couches in the waiting room and laid down. Suddenly my doc appeared and took me right away. At that time I wasn't being rude or persistent especially. It was that I just couldn't, didn't have the energy to go down the elevator and back to my car. I was just going to take a little nap, but it worked to my benefit.

I'll let you know whether I get anywhere today with the doc.

LyricZ , I feel your pain! Glad to know that this board is helping!! It really helped me as well. I had my first study done at the beginning of May, and I didn't get the titration til the end of July, was literally pulling my hair out. That doesn't even include the 3 year wait I've had in order to be able to get a sleep study done in the first place! I moved around so much and so quickly that no where could I get in the 6 month waiting time just to get the sleep study. But here I am now, I survived. Half my hair is grey though!

Ditto to what everyone else said. And very important not to get down on yourself!!!! Good luck {{ hugs }}

Sleep doc called me a few minutes ago. She said that as we speak, she was writing the prescription for my CPAP, and that she would fax it to the DME right away.

I wanted an APAP with software that I can read, and she said that my insurance will probably not pay for any more than a basic machine. I told her to order it, and I'll worry about how to pay for it later.

She said that the DME will call me today or tomorrow to arrange for me to get the machine. I don't know where I'll have to go to pick it up, but I'll go to the ends of the earth if necessary.

How long does it usually take to get the CPAP machine from this point? I'm hoping for at least Thursday or Friday of this week.
