Hi, Im new to this forum, I have had my cpap machine for about a week now. The first few days were wonderful I woke alert and felt like a new person, but on the fourth day I awoke with horrible gas and bloating to the point I felt like I was going to throw-up or have a heart attack. Any one here have this problem and how did you correct it. I was so stoked about how good I woke up feeling until this started. Any help would be appreciated.
Im waking up with Horrible gas and stomach bloating
Go up near the top of the page and click on the "Search" function.
Then, do a search on the word "aerophagia". There will be many threads and posts on it. It's somewhat common and the reasons for it and remedies are many and varied according to each individual. In other words, what may work for one may or may not work for another.

xPAP and Quattro std mask (plus a pad-a-cheek anti-leak strap)
Have you been diagnosed with acid reflux disease (GERD)? If not, you may want to have it checked.
After my first night at home on the cpap I was very bloated and farted all day, loud ones. It was never as bad and gradually got much much better. However, I occasionally have some bad nights with it.
I've narrowed down my worst aerophagia nights to my GERD. I have something called silent GERD, so the symptoms were very subtle to nonexistent when I was first diagnosed. However, there was quite a bit of damage to the esophagus (stage 2 GERD). This was years before my OSA diagnosis. So, even if you don't have obvious symptoms, you should probably be checked for GERD. (Warning: I had to talk my doctor into it.) GERD will complicate cpap treatment in a variety of ways, but is relatively manageable if you know about it.
Now I find my worst aerophagia nights are associated with GERD. If I forget to take my reflux meds before supper or eat too soon before bedtime, it will increase the aerophagia. Yesterday for supper I ate something that I know aggravates my GERD. It looked delicious and I figured it wouldn't hurt much, plus I had taken my meds. WRONG! I woke in the middle of the night in great pain. I first relieved the gas . I was side sleeping, so switched to my back. I have more apneas on my back, but less aerophagia, so it's a trade off. Still this morning, my AHI was under 2.0. I did get solid sleep after that.
Don't let the gas problem interfere with your success. Success can involve a detective work. There are people here with experience with this. Track down what's causing it and take care of it.
