hypopneas

Post by Eleena » Fri Aug 24, 2007 9:30 am

Still new with my machine and learning. I have 2-3 hypopneas a night. What is this and should I be worried?

Assuming you're not having a lot of apneas and only a few hypopneas (like the number you mentioned), sounds like you're doing just fine.

If you go up to the yellow lightbulb (Our Collective Wisdom) there is this link:

cpaptalk-articles/sleep-apnea-CPAP-definitions.html

If that isn't enough, you can do an Internet search on "Apnea" and "Hypopnea", there's also some good information and definitions in Wikipedia and other places.

Best wishes,

Den

A hypopnea is a partial closing of the air ways of at leat 50% for at least 10 seconds. Any total of apneas and hypopneas per hour (ahi) under 5 is considered normal. No, it is not anything to worry about. As a matter of fact, give yourself a pat on the back. Cpap is working for you.

Hypopneas are basically shallow breaths. If you have only 2-3 per night, relax and sleep well. (Assuming you don't have lots of apneas, which are a cessation of breathing)...
