I am still pretty new. Using my apap for 3 weeks now. What is ramp duration and what should it be set at?

The ramp is when the machine starts at a lower pressure and works its way up to the prescribed pressure over a periopd of time set by the user or DME. I don't use the ramp, I like to start at the prescribed pressure. You can set the ramp for 0 to 30 minutes on your machine. You set it for what you're comfortable with.

Re: ramp duration
Its the time that your CPAP takes to slowly increase from a low starting flow rate(usually around 4cm H2O) to whatever your tritated "working" flow rate is.Eleena wrote:What is ramp duration and what should it be set at?
The range of settings usually goes from 5 minutes to around 45 minutes. As far as what it should be set to, the depends on what your needs are in terms of feeling "settled" enough to fall asleep with your CPAP mask on.
Some people like no settling time, while other want as much as they can get. If you are unsure, I suggest setting it to 5 minutes and increasing it only if you specifically feel the need to!
Cheers,
Bill
Like Brenda said, on the 420E the ramp duration is up 30 minutes.

And now here is my secret, a very simple secret; it is only with the heart that one can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye.

When I first started I was using a half hour ramp. Start at 6, then work up to my 14. Now I set it at 5 min and I am good. I still swallow some air...but I have learned how to get it out if I have to.
I wouldnt start a ramp any lower than 6. Most people have mentioned feeling suffocated if they go any lower than that. Even at a 6 I feel like I am not getting quite enough air.

Ramp is a feature to help you fall asleep. On the 420e it is also a Settling feature where the machine won't respond to events during that period. Ramp on the 420e works in Auto mode as well as cpap mode. Ramp on the 420e more closely resembles that of Auto:Ramp found on the M series Remstar Autos.
IF your 90% pressure is say 12 cm, you can set the 420e up with a range like 8.0 cm to 15 cm, then for those nights that it is more difficult to fall asleep you can Ramp setup and use Ramp if needed.
For example, you can have a lower pressure set say 6.5 cm (lower than the 8.0 Initial pressure set in the range) and when you hit the Ramp button it will drop from the 8.0 initial pressure to the lower 6.5 Ramp pressure for the period dialed in.
If you are going to use it, I would set it for 30-minutes. Not going to hurt anything if you start having onset events, you want the machine to avoid responding to those anyway. If you are still not asleep after 30-minutes, you can hit that button as many times as you like.
